Student shows brighten holidays

By Janis Fontaine

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

The Young Singers of the Palm Beaches, a chorus of 330 kids age 8 to 18 who love to sing, brings its annual show to the Kravis Center stage Sunday.

Winter Tapestry 2012 will combine traditional and contemporary holiday music with humor and an audience sing-a-long.

The Young Singers was the brain child of local music educators who had seen music education in schools decimated. Shawn Berry, Michael Yannette, Laura Thomas and Connie Drosakis wanted to start a program that would welcome every child who wanted to sing, without regard to race, religion or economics. In 2003, 79 singers performed. Today they have 330 kids in six different choirs.

Its goals — to break down social barriers, develop life skills, provide an outlet for creativity and foster good citizenship — have been the focus of YSPB for 10 years. Music education is an important component for kids. Like art and sports, music combines a unique learning opportunity with an activity that’s fun and enriching for kids.

The choirs have even performed in Salzburg and Vienna.

The Dreyfoos School of the Arts will present its annual Prism Concert Tuesday.

Thanks to best-selling author James Patterson and his wife Sue, the annual concert has a new venue: The Kravis Center.

After seeing the sold-out performance by the students last year, the Pattersons underwrote the cost of presenting the annual holiday concert at the Kravis Center.

See performances by Dreyfoos’ students in each of the arts magnet’s musical disciplines: choral, piano, and instrumental performances. Performances will be “in the round,” with one performance on stage, followed by another in the aisles and another in the rear of the theatre.
