Local chef Josh Lyons chops his last on 'Food Network Star'

He came. He "Chopped." He got chopped.

Or would that be popped?

Jupiter's Josh Lyons, rock-n-roll sushi chef and "Food Network Star" contestant, was sent to pack his knives and go (yeah, I know that's the other cooking competition's tag line) from the popular show on Sunday's episode. He and his fellow members of Team Giada, captained by famous and lovely chef Giada, were sent to make desserts for the persnickety judges of "Chopped."

It might be more accurate to say that Josh was popped - as in, he got called out for frying the popcorn in his "Chopped" basket (For novices, the show forces chefs to put on their thinking caps and come up with a dish based around four usually culinarily varied and sometimes weird ingredients.) Josh and his team had to make a dessert out of Reeses Pieces, popcorn, coconut, and grape soda. Ih feel him about the frying, because as a non-trained chef partially raised by a grandmother from Arkansas, grease is my default position. When in doubt what to do with ingredient, she just hauled out the cast iron pan and the Crisco and deep fried that sucker. And it usually tasted like Fried, no matter what it was. And was delicious.

Josh made aebleskivers, a Danish fried dough pastry, but got knocked for included unpopped popcorn kernels with his dish. Also, he didn't include the tip he was supposed to have done in his presentation, and his attempt to marry Asian and Danish flavors came off as too busy. Ever the trooper, Josh forged ahead with the Producer's Challenge, where he, Nikki and Martie, the other potential choppees, had to grill something without the outdoor grill. His meatball looked good, but when it came down to he and Nikki, the judges chose her. Phooey.

Fortunately, we'll be able to see Josh, without the cable bills, at Fuku on Clematis Street, since he's their sushi chef! Hurray, real life!
