WEST PALM BEACH —
James Hansen is, admittedly, “not a reality show guy.” But he was front and center Tuesday night at Clematis Street’s Roxy’s pub, crowded in front of the TVs above the bar anyway, to raise a glass in support of a hometown girl vying for televised glory.
“She has an angelic voice,” Hansen, 33, of Palm Beach Gardens, said of Cassadee Pope, whose journey on NBC’s “The Voice” from former lead singer to crowd favorite has gotten not only national attention, but captured the hearts of Palm Beach County as well. Some fans, including downtown blogger Aaron “A Guy On Clematis” Wormus, gathered at Roxy’s to cheer her on.
Pope, a 24-year-old Wellington High School graduate, won the top-rated NBC singing competition, beating out Scottish rocker Terry McDermott and Nicholas David. A favorite since early in the season, Pope turned all four of the celebrity judges’ chairs during her initial blind audition, settling on country star Blake Shelton as a coach.
Although the former Hey Monday singer first seemed more comfortable with pop/punk, she has segued over the season into more ballads, particularly country ones. Her versions of songs like Shelton’s own “Over You,” and “Cry,” made popular by Faith Hill, have charted well on iTunes. But her pull, say her fans, goes beyond her music, and into her girl-next-door demeanor and openness with viewers about everything from her quest to establish herself as a solo artist and her estrangement from her father, who she has said reached out to her after she mentioned him on “The Voice.”
“She’s an average girl, even though she’d had some success (earlier),” said Wormus, who ran into Pope on the street a few weeks ago when she was in town with an NBC camera crew to record her triumphant trip home to see friends and family, do radio, and appear at the Clematis By Night concert series. “People still feel connected to her.”
Pope was one of three Palm Beach County singers representing on the show this season — Boca Raton’s Michaela Paige and West Palm Beach’s Laura Vivas were also in the running but went home earlier in the season. Paige appeared on Tuesday night’s live finale, singing with other former contestants and McDermott on Kiss’ “Rock and Roll All Night.”
Kristi Zumft, who owns Runway Consignment Boutique downtown and helped organize the viewing party, said that Pope’s appearance on the show was good for West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County. “She’s done so well, and she keeps coming back home. I love her connection with West Palm Beach. She’s going to be a major star.”
There were also private viewing parties for Cassadee hosted by family friends such as Kathy Rathbun, who has known the singer since she was about 3 years old. “We watched her grow up. She’s so dedicated to her music, and her passion has just grown.” said Rathbun, who hosted about 12 Cassadee fans at her West Palm Beach home. “She just gives it everything. I don’t even think it’s hit her yet.”
