TV Talk: Closing ceremony cut may hurt NBC sitcom

By Jonathan Tully

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

While there were many heroes at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, it seemed like there was pretty much one villain – NBC.

The network has been vilified for cutting away from the closing ceremony just before the performance by The Who which wrapped it up, and also for cutting out performances by Ray Davies, Kate Bush and more. All for a new sitcom, Animal Practice.

The vitriol has come from the media, from fans, from anyone with access to Twitter, Facebook, pen and paper, whatever. (Here's a piece by The Arizona Republic's Ed Masley, focusing specifically on NBC's cut of Davies -- I agree, "Waterloo Sunset" is one of the truly great songs of all time, and NBC flat blew it with that call.)

(And by the way, NBC, absolutely zero mention during prime time of Blur's Hyde Park show, which was put on at around the same time as the closing ceremony. Only about 80,000 people there. No mention. #nbcfail.)

The BBC’s report above has some photos of the highlights, but I have to wonder if the network has done Animal Practice more harm than good for this decision.

  • Now on to regular TV – Many shows are starting or coming back earlier than we’ve come to expect, including the aforementioned Animal Practice, another new NBC sitcom, Go On, and AMC’s western, Hell on Wheels, which started its second season in a precarious position: Opposite Sunday’s closing ceremony. The rapper Common, who plays former slave Elam Ferguson, talks about the show.
  •  One positive in NBC’s column: They showed this during the Olympics, a preview of the upcoming season of Parks and Recreation, where Tom Haverford (Aziz Ansari) tried to wrestle Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman). Fans of the show can guess how this turned out.
