Who he is: John Davidson, 71, is a well-known actor, singer and musician. Davidson has been entertaining people for more than half a century, from Broadway to Hollywood to his own theatre in Branson, Mo., and his resume is jam-packed with stage and television credits.

Two years ago, John Davidson thought he was retiring. Davidson and his wife of 34 years bought a house in Atlantis Country Club, a sprawling, verdant community tucked between Congress and Military in suburban Lake Worth. His ex-wife, daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren already lived there and he and Rhonda wanted to be near them. “We all get along,” Davidson said by phone from New York City.

Then a funny thing happened. Or rather didn’t happen. Davidson found out he wasn’t the retiring kind.

“I don’t think I’ll ever retire,” Davidson says now. “I can’t think of anything I’d rather be doing. I love performing. I love the act of singing, the act of breathing correctly. It’s a physical workout. Singing feels good in my head, and I love being a story-teller.”

Almost as soon as they got settled, Davidson approached the management at Atlantis and suggested a show in the lounge. He told them they could pay him per-person and if people show up, fine, and if they don’t, so what? The show quickly exceeded the seating capacity of the lounge and moved into the dining room. Davidson developed a following, and that opened the door for other performers.

Now, the silver haired hunk is so busy he can only squeeze in six shows at Atlantis this week and next before he heads off to his next gig.

Davidson just finished an Off Broadway run of “The Fantasticks,” performing the role of Bellamy in a production at the Snapple Theatre Center which also featured pop singer Aaron Carter. He and Rhonda had planned to return to Atlantis to spend a few weeks with his family here, before Davidson began his 50th anniversary tour. Now that tour will have to wait until 2014, because Davidson was recently offered a major part in a show which will tour for the balance of the year. (He can’t say what it is, but watch for the official announcement in late March.)

He and Rhonda had planned to travel in an RV they just bought, but that may change. “We love RVing. I plan to use it as my dressing room on the tour. Ours has a fireplace and is so nice. And you meet the nicest people at campgrounds.”

Here are a few of his favorite things:

Favorite place for a quiet dinner:

“La Granja. There are two of them: One in Lake Worth and one in Lantana. My wife and I lived in Mexico for six years and we love their chicken and the way they do their plantains, and I can practice my Spanish.”

“We love John Prince Park in Lake Worth for biking. In fact, the campground will serve as our home for a few days while we break in our new RV.”

Why you love living in Palm Beach County?

“We love the balmy Florida nights. Tropical nights are so beautiful. We love sitting out on our patio and having a glass of wine. Atlantis has such interesting people, and I love three generations of family getting together. I’ve tried golf but I just can’t do it.”
