Who he is: Fans know Tim Byrd as “The Byrdman”, a popular radio personality at local stations WRMF-FM, WEAT-FM and KOOL 105.5-FM. But Byrd is also an actor (he was huge in France for his role in the straight-to-video film “The Ambulance”), a speaker, a producer and all-around idea guy.

Byrd knew he wanted to be on the radio when he was just 15 years old. He earned a job at a family owned station in Johnston, S.C., then hopscotched his way to jobs in Charlotte, N.C., and Jacksonville. At 21, he moved on to Winston-Salem, N.C. and became the youngest program director in the state.

Other jobs and promotions followed until he found himself in New York City working with Don Imus and Howard Stern. Then it was on VH-1 where Byrd became the prototype for the veejay. He worked for the channel for nearly five years before leaving to return to radio in Phoenix and Washington, D.C. before finally landing in South Florida.

Byrd considers it a privilege to have hosted dozens of galas, balls, fundraisers, benefits and walks. He’s especially proud of his 13 year affiliation with The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Byrd lives in Palm Beach Gardens with his wife Arsalia, “a timeless beauty.” Byrd still loves to share what he knows — interesting people and places in the county he loves. Byrd covers it all on his web site, www.PalmBeachLiveWorkPlay.com, which promotes living the good life in his adopted hometown, Palm Beach Gardens.

On Wednesday, Byrd will give a dramatic reading of Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address at the Palm Beach Gardens Concert Band’s annual Patriotic Salute at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 20 at Eissey Campus Theatre, 3160 PGA Blvd., Palm Beach Gardens. Tickets are 15. Call 561-207-5900.

Here are a few of his favorite places:

Favorite breakfast place:

A little hole in the wall called the Royal Café in Jupiter. It’s on Indiantown Road in a little strip center just east of A1A. It’s family owned and you can get whatever you want there. They don’t just put onions in the potatoes, they ask you if you want them. I’ve been going there for eight or nine years. Perfect for brunch after church on Sunday.

Royal Cafe Family Restaurant, 75 E. Indiantown Road, Jupiter. Info: 561-747-7426.

Favorite place to take out-of-town guests:

The Colony. It has a rich history. It’s a boutique hotel with world-class feel. I love the décor, and I like the vibe in there. A nice, warm but professional feeling. And of course the Royal Room for cabaret for the intimacy of the space.

Favorite place for a business lunch:

Bice, the atmosphere there is great. It has a very warm feeling and the food is delicious and consistent. I eat really clean, because I have allergies. I grew up my whole life very sickly, ear aches every month, so many that both my eardrums burst. I stopped all dairy and I went a whole year without being sick. Places need to be ready to make adjustments for food allergies because so many people have them.

Favorite place for fine dining:

50 Ocean in Delray Beach. It’s right on top of Boston’s on the Beach. It’s literally on the ocean. My food experience there has always been top shelf. The manager, knowing my dairy situation, fixed me a custard, just for me, with no dairy. The ocean creates great atmosphere and the décor is really nice. It’s got kind of a Keys’ feel, a touch of Hemingway. There’s a room with really neat maps on the wall.

50 Ocean, 40 S. Ocean Blvd., Delray Beach. Info: 561-278-3364; 50ocean.com

Favorite way to relax and recharge:

I like to go to South Beach and stay somewhere right around 8th Street. Then I get up early, have a big breakfast at the News Cafe and watch the world go by. It’s fun to sit there and breathe the ocean air and watch the scene develop. The people are beautiful and they’re showing skin and then someone comes by with an ocelot on a leash. Even though I haven’t gone far I feel like I’ve really gotten away. Relaxing to me is nice atmosphere and people having fun.

News Cafe, 800 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach. Info: 305-538-6397; newscafe.com

Favorite place for a quiet dinner:

Olio, in Delray Beach. It’s just off Atlantic and it’s interesting because in the back there’s a wine room that is sort of dark and they’ve set tables up and it’s a really different dining experience. Owners Tony and Rachel Boueri have a clothing store attached to the restaurant and there’s an outside area where you can have a cigar after the meal.

Olio Bistro, 42 S.E Second Ave., Delray Beach. Info: 561-278-6633; oliobistro.com

Favorite park:

The Morikami. When I first came here, I visited all the time. It’s one of the most peaceful places ever. A perfect place to go and spend quiet time with yourself. Walking the paths is so tranquil.

The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, 4000 Morikami Park Blvd., Delray Beach. Info: 561-495-0233; morikami.org

Favorite theatre:

The Maltz Jupiter. It’s so intimate. I worked for the founder, Milton Maltz, when I was in radio in Cleveland. He knows the business and he understands people.

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre, 1001 E. Indiantown Road, Jupiter. Info: 561-575-2223; Maltzjupiter.org
