Is that Santa and his reindeer landing on the roof of that house?
Yes, it’s Christmas time again in The Heights of Jupiter neighborhood, where residents know a thing or two about decorating for the holidays.
More than half of the 2,000-plus homes in the neighborhood, snuggled up against the east side of I-95 at Donald Ross Road, are aglow each night.
The neighborhood’s centerpiece is Donny and Jennifer Liberman’s home at 6198 Hollywood Street, where Donny’s handmade Flying Santa has been lighting the way for visitors for 15 years. Santa and his sleigh rotate around on a giant mechanical arm that makes it look as though the whole shebang is about to land on the roof. The Libermans have to hire a crane to help Donny get the heavy contraption on the roof.
But here’s a bit of trivia: Those aren’t reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh. Those are rein-Dachshunds, a tribute to the family’s beloved dog that passed away.
When Jennifer and Donny Liberman moved to the Heights 20 years back, there were only three houses on the block. As some of the first residents, they’ve seen a lot change over the years, but a few things haven’t changed: This neighborhood is more than just a place to live and most of the families are full of holiday spirit.
“It’s so fun for the children,” Jennifer Liberman said.
In their garage, kids’ thank-you letters – some addressed only to the Flying Santa House – are taped up on the wall. “My family’s Christmas officially starts with a trip to see your house,” one mom wrote.
But it isn’t just families who visit. You’ll see tour buses and trolleys, vans and pick-up trucks, all loaded with visitors of every age. Traffic slows to a crawl as people ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ at the colorful displays, shouting their appreciation to the homeowners.
Lu and Lee Stock have lived at 6310 Pompano Street for more than 19 years. Their daughter, Tammy, lives one street over. They say the neighborhood has old-fashioned appeal, a throw-back to a time when neighbors helped one another and kept an eye on each other’s kids. Here, kids play outside and the garage is a second living room.
“These are true neighbors. People are friendly and they watch out for each other,” Lu Stock said.
Streets show their individuality with themes – one has lighted arches, another candy canes, the next snowflakes, then lighted trees, and one looks like a herd of reindeer has recently arrived from up north. When you see dozens of arches or candy canes stretching down the street from the first home to the last, it’s proof that it does take a village to decorate for the holidays.
“We cut back this year and gave a lot of our decorations to the neighbors,” Lu Stock said. She says the number of houses that decorate is close to 85 percent. Some are simple, minimalist in their approach. Others are lavish, not a bit of their yard untouched.
Part of the appeal of the Heights — and the reason everyone can go a little bit crazy for Christmas — is the absence of a homeowner’s association. There are a few rules — you can’t park your boat in the driveway — but limitations on holiday decorations isn’t one of them.
At Jimmy and Lisa Yu’s house at 6090 Hollywood, an Underwater Wonderland theme is in place. Santa does the hula in the front yard, and there’s a snow-girl in a bikini. Nemo is swimming by. The Yus, who have lived in the Heights for 22 years, don’t just go inside when the decorating is done. “We sit out in the driveway and watch the people, the joy of people enjoying it,” Lisa Yu said.
The Yu’s next door neighbors aren’t so effusive with their decorations, but they are clever. A big red sign with an arrow pointing at the Yu’s says “Ditto!”
Dozens of Nativity scenes – some with just the holy family and others with the three kings and even one with all the animals – remind visitors why there’s a Christmas at all.
Whether your favorite holiday character is Charlie Brown and Snoopy, Santa or those amazing reindeer lined up for take-off, you’ll find it here in the Heights of Jupiter.
There’s not a Grinch in the bunch.
“I love this neighborhood,” Lu Stock said. “I’ll die here.”
If you go:
THE HEIGHTS
Take I-95 to Donald Ross Road and go east. Get in the left hand lane immediately so you can turn left onto Heights Boulevard at the light. Follow the road about a mile and look to your left. You can turn down just about any street, but don’t miss Hollywood.
