Special to the Palm Beach Post

Most singer/songwriters express themselves primarily through their original compositions, but Boynton Beach vocalist and guitarist Jason Colannino (jasoncolannino.com) has become one of South Florida’s busiest performers by being a master interpreter.

Sure, the New Jersey native has released two original CDs since moving south 20 years ago (with a third on the way), but the majority of his 800-deep song list involves covers. And Colannino exactingly mimics influences from Harry Chapin and James Taylor to The Beatles and Neil Young — the artist he’s linked to most often.

Nearly 150 of Colannino’s songs are by Young; closer to 200 when you factor in his covers of Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Which is why he was chosen to perform a solo tribute — with backing vocal appearances by his wife, Kim Colannino, and Kate Wentley — to benefit the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation (christopherreeve.org), dedicated toward curing spinal cord injuries like the one its late namesake actor suffered.

“I can’t help but sound like Neil when I perform his songs,” Colannino says, “because that’s how I hear them. They’re passionate, well-written and meaningful.”

See Jason Colannino at 8 p.m. today in A Tribute To Neil Young at the Crest Theatre at Old School Square, 51 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach ($25, 561-243-7299, ext. 1). He also plays from 4-7 p.m. every Sunday at Rudy’s Stand-Up Saloon, 9 N. J St., Lake Worth (561-602-5307), from 7:30-11:30 p.m. every Monday at Johnnie Brown’s 301 E. Atlantic Ave., Delray Beach (561-243-9911), from 6:30-8:30 p.m. every Tuesday at the Sundy House, 106 S. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach (561-272-5678), from 2-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Marriott Oceana Palms, 3200 N. Ocean Dr., Singer Island (561-227-3600), and from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 13 in a Florida Outreach Center for the Blind benefit at the Hilton Palm Beach Airport Hotel, 150 Australian Ave., West Palm Beach (561-684-9400).
