“Samuel Adams assumed what position in the new government?”

I look across the high-top table at my husband, who is half-listening to the question, and half-finishing a phone call.

“Samuel Adams?” I mouth, hoping than nobody at the surrounding tables on the busy patio at Lantana Jack’s are listening.

“Brewmaster?” he smirks, quietly. I smirk back and shake my head.

“Governor of Massachusetts,” he whispers. I’m not sure. So I write down, “Vice president.”

There is no college scholarship on the line for this. Alec Trebek is not waiting with thousands of dollars and a life supply of Rice-A-Roni. The most we’re gonna get out of this, materially-speaking, is a $25 bar tab. But it’s not a mere cheap dinner we’re after. Oh, noo. What Team Terp, the one-week defending champions of Think and Drink Trivia, are after, is a reckoning. No, wait … that was Wyatt Earp in Tombstone.

We just like being the smartest people in the room for a week.

Of course, the contextual criteria for smarts here includes knowing that Tarzan’s friend Cheetah was an ape, not a Cheetah, and that the ear contains a hammer and a drum, and that that Bobby Brown was in New Edition before explaining his prerogative to the people. Clearly, we’re not applying for Mensa. But everybody has something they’re good at, or at least tries to be. Some people play kickball. Others play golf. We play trivia.

And we’re good at it. The thing is, everyone here on Tuesday nights at this chill neighborhood spot with fantastic specials and even more fantastic food and drink is really smart. Last week, Team Terp (for my alma mater the University of Maryland) came from behind to win first place bragging rights and the $25 bar tab, which we used to half-cover the dinner we’d already eaten. But the other teams were really close...too close.

The good part is that everyone is motivated but doesn’t take themselves too seriously, as in, I have yet to witness a trivia-based throwdown. We haven’t become friends with any of the other teams yet, but there are a lot of appreciative and impressed nods across the room when we hear an enthusiastic “Wooh!” denoting a correct answer.

We weren’t getting as many of those as we’d hoped - we fumbled on the original number of Beach Boys. The Terps would come in third this night, failing to capture either the bar tab or the second-place free bottle of wine. But we did get a free drink.

And even though we got that Samuel Adams question totally wrong -OK, it was my fault - we felt pretty good about ourselves. And we didn’t have to run laps.
