When the executives at Josh Turner’s record label said they planned to release a religious song called “Long Black Train” to radio, Turner’s response was, ‘“Y’all have lost your minds. An old-fashioned, old-timey gospel-spiritual song? Commercial country radio will never play it.’”
Turner was wrong. “Radio came on board because the fans wanted to hear it,” Turner said by phone. “It changed people’s lives, it even saved people’s lives. It was a big, strong song for me and still is.”
