Two new local albums worth checking out

By Bill Meredith

Special to the Palm Beach Post

The ongoing fusing of country music with other genres is illustrated by two new local releases. “Livin’ Paycheck to Paycheck” by the West Palm Beach-based Cecilia Lauren and the Ocoee River Band (cecilialauren.com) essentially features the namesake country singer/guitarist with a rock quartet (guitarist Steve Netzel, guitarist/keyboardist George Colavecchio, bassist Richie North and drummer Al Sofield, all backing vocalists).

The band was a separate entity before welcoming Lauren in four years ago to emulate the crossover success of the likes of Shania Twain and Sugarland. Recorded at G-Star Studios in Palm Springs, this debut CD clicks when it goes furthest toward country, like Lauren’s waltzing title track and Colavecchio’s ballad “Houston To Memphis 2011.” The rockers include KISS-tinged originals and a closing cover of Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’Mine.”

See Cecilia Lauren and the Ocoee River Band from 7-11 p.m. on Friday at CityPlace Plaza, 700 S. Rosemary Ave., West Palm Beach (561-366-1000), and from 8-11 p.m. on Saturday at Lantana Jack’s, 308 N. Dixie Hwy., Lantana (561-847-4158).

“Over You Now” by Lake Worth-based Max DuBose and the Mplants (maxdubose.webs.com) is a swampy gumbo of country, blues and other roots music styles. Vocalist/guitarist DuBose is adept at tongue-in-cheek novelty tunes like “My Band Got the Blame,” an early highlight, but the subsequent ballad “I Love You Through the Wind” also stands out.

Recorded at The Shed in Lake Worth, DuBose’s third release also features guitarist/vocalist Rick Cohen, slide guitarist Steven Volante, bassist Chris Baker, drummer Ric Pattison, and backing vocalists Suzanne Cannon and Jade Walker. Late gems include the ballad “When My Everything is Gone” and the comical “Heartburn, Cheatin’ and Pork Rinds.”

‘Round town

The Sebastian-based Randy Skirvin Band (myspace.com/randyskirvin) is led by the guitarist/vocalist from classic rock bands like Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, and Spirit. His band features keyboardist Mark Leach, bassist Bob Holifield and drummer Michael Duncan, and plays originals and classics at 8 p.m. on Friday at the Mos’Art Theatre, 700 Park Ave., Lake Park ($10, 561-337-6763)….A historical marker will be unveiled to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the 1969 Palm Beach Pop Festival (which featured the Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Sly and the Family Stone, and King Crimson) at 2 p.m. on Nov. 24 at Palm Beach International Raceway, 17047 Beeline Hwy., Jupiter (with $20 admission for the Citrus Nationals racing event, 561-622-1400, oldrockphoto.com)….RIP John Luzi, a gifted North Palm Beach-based bassist/vocalist for bands including Jazz Stream, who died on Oct. 23 from complications with a series of strokes. He was 75.
