Disabled painter’s life may be subject of movie

By Barbara Marshall

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

The inspiring story of disabled Palm Beach Gardens painter, A.J. Brockman, may soon be coming to a movie screen near you, if his fans can raise $250,000 in production costs.

Called “Differently Abled,” the film will profile the indefatigable spirit and optimism of Brockman, who has spinal muscular atrophy and has been in a wheelchair since he was 2. He paints using only his left index finger and a variety of complex computer programs.

In October, Brockman, who was the subject of a “Palm Beach Post” story, met President Obama after giving him a portrait he painted of the First Family. During a reception following a Delray Beach speech, the president told Brockman he hoped the portrait would one day hang in his personal library.

The documentary will be produced by No White Flags, a non-profit production company formed by Brockman’s manager.

The funding plea was posted earlier this month on Indiegogo, a crowd-source funding site.

According to the site, the movie hopes “to inspire people from all walks (and wheels) of life to follow their dreams…to change people’s perceptions of what it means to have a disability.” Contributions will help give Brockman a way “to encourage other disabled people, young and old, to never surrender. No white flags.”

Donations will be taken through December 31 at www.indiegogo.com/differentlyabled. Brockman can be reached at www.singlehandedstudio.com.
