DELRAY BEACH —

The stage was set for a Solomonic decision: Either keep a popular performance arts venue in the Pineapple Grove neighborhood or replace it with a law firm that would bring 100 more employees into the downtown area. Both factions wanted to buy the same space, 10,000 square feet on the ground floor of a city-owned garage on Second Avenue. Both offered to pay $2.5 million.

But in a dramatic announcement tonight, Mayor Thomas Carney suggested that the commission and the two groups could work with the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency to make available five acres on west Atlantic Avenue.
