Forget the stale jokes about misbehaving models who subsist on celery sticks … at least among this catwalk crowd.

Most of the fledgling models participating in Palm Beach Fashion Camp — 33 girls ages 5 to 16 — said the most interesting thing they learned during the seven-week camp was either etiquette or nutrition. Sometimes both.

Tori Beradesco, a Palm Beach Gardens 10-year-old, said her take-away lesson was, “Don’t eat french fries with your fingers.”

Eight-year-old Elena Lorvil of Jupiter cited table manners in general as her favorite topic, while Emily Kloeckner, a 15-year-old who lives in Lake Worth, said she learned that “having a model’s body doesn’t mean that you don’t eat. You just eat healthy.”

Of course, camp director Barbara Smoliak also taught them about modeling techniques and movement to music, and the girls demonstrated their new moves during a graduation show at Boynton Beach Mall.

At the end of the runway stood a phalanx of friends and family aiming cellphones and zoom lenses their way.

“It was sort of freaky with all the cameras,” said Julia Held, a 9-year-old from Jupiter. “I didn’t know which one to look at.”

That’s another delicious thing models learn early on — it’s hard to know where to look, when everyone’s looking at you.

So you think you can model?

Barbara Smoliak, founder of Palm Beach Fashion Camp, needs a few good models for back-to-school fashion shows at Boynton Beach Mall next month.

She’ll hold an open audition — for boys and girls — from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday in the mall, on a runway set up near Dillard’s.
What’s she after? ‘Kids that have confidence,’ she says, ‘that are not afraid to look the judges in the eye and smile.’

The fashion shows will take place in the same location at 1 and 4 p.m. Aug. 15 and 2 p.m. Aug. 16.

Also, the next session of Palm Beach Fashion Camp will begin Sept. 12 at Boynton Beach Mall and The Gardens Mall.

First, the three girls pictured are not model types. the brunette, right, is too fat. the other too are not tall enough and look a little skanky.

why do soccer moms teach their daughters that a woman’s value is in her looks? soccer moms are horrible parents. moms stink. dads rule.

Jeez-us H seismann! You’re being a little bit harsh there ain’t ya’?They’re just kids killin’ time during the summer and having a little fun – not necessarily trying to be the next Tyra or Gisele for Christ sake. Besides, I suppose you’re a former Ralph Lauren underwear model with six pack, washboard abs, right?

    Mark Seisman is heartless.

I like these girls and the fact that they are learning how to eat properly, act appropriately, dress nicely.

They are not on the streets buddy!

You said in your post, “moms teach their daughters that a woman’s value is in her looks”

If you too didn’t evaluate their looks you wouldn’t have made such an ignorant comment. No credit to you, Petey….

If you too didn’t evaluate their looks you wouldn’t have made such an ignorant comment in your first paragragh. No credit to you, Petey….
