Carson Kressley is best-known for his opinions on men’s fashion, but he’s also a regular on the red-carpet circuit, commenting on women’s fashion and trends. He also has his own line, Perfect, sold on QVC.

Here are a few things he says women can do to update their wardrobes inexpensively this fall:

Focus on accessories: “It’s amazing what a pair of shoes can do for an outfit,” he says. Look for styles embellished with jewels, studs and hardware.

Cardigans are a key item, but be sure to belt them: Use thick belts, thin belts, multiple belts. “For this kind of thing, you can shop at Claire’s.”

Use color: “It makes you feel good to wear the plums, wines and teals.”

Scour thrift stores for jewelry: “The big necklace is a big item, but you can get the luxe look for less. Look for chubby beads and pieces you can layer.”

Fill in your wardrobe with items from discount stores: “Don’t buy your evening dress here, but look for layering pieces like a ruffled blouse.”

Watch the red carpet: Most women don’t have the opportunity or the budget to dress like movie stars at awards ceremonies, but the red carpet is a great place to get ideas about color, style and silhouettes that you can adapt to your life, Kressley says.
