An old married Gen-Xer on the premiere of “The Bachelor”

Ladies, is this guy worth your dignity?

I believe it was late singer/owner of the world’s most fabulous blow-out Jermaine Stewart who said in his seminal “We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off” - ”So come on baby, won’t you show some class? Why you wanna move so fast?”

It is in the memory of Jermaine and his hair that I dedicate this to the toned, tanned datetestants of the new season of “The Bachelor”: “Oh, come on ladies, won’t you show some class? On TV drunk off of your…”

Well, you get it.

Just wish these grown women who come looking for a modeling career, umm.. a future reality show …wait,a story to relate back to the Mothership love got it too. Which is that you have less chance finding true love on a game show stocked with booze, jealousy and crazy wenches as you do finding a parking space at the gym on January 2.

I did some stupid things to find love in my 20s and 30s – it was literally in the papers. Once or twice it certainly involved tipsy declarations of love or attraction while trying to stand up. But the one thing I never did was let somebody tape me being drunk and declarative and put it on TV. That I know of. Certainly no releases were signed saying “Please, record me being a crazy drunken obsessive cow.” Any tapes of me being a drunken obsessive cow were recorded without my permission. And if there are some out there – I swear, there couldn’t be many but it only takes one.

Besides the obvious issues of voluntarily appearing as the most ridiculous, pathetic version of yourself, when you have to go back to your life with your same friends, and your same face and name, with everyone knowing what a jerk you made of yourself, let me give you beautiful, tiny, coiffed young things some advice. (In my day I would say I want to drop some knowledge on you, but then saying that without irony would make me seem even older.)

You cannot, as one of the sad sisters on the show said, plan to come on a TV game show and fall in love with some stranger who only know from watching him on TV being dumped by some other sad sister. I mean, you can plan it all you want. But there is absolutely no guarantee that this will happen, apparently when you’re basically one out of a live mail order bride collection, a zoo where a guy can pick whichever drunken exotic creature happens to fall out of her cage in front of him. As D.L. Hughley once said about bill collectors, you can expect payment any time you want. But that doesn’t mean you’re gonna get it.

I looked for love in all the wrong places, in the right places at the wrong time, and in some places in some circuses with clowns whose existence I disavow all knowledge of, just like in “Mission Impossible” but with cocktails and desperation. And when I found it, all I was looking for was a  drink with a high school classmate I hadn’t seen in 20 years. It just found me, unexpectedly and crazily, at maybe the one moment I wasn’t looking for it.  (Of course, I was in my late 30s, with no interest in applying for a dating game show – and very few of these shows seemed to be looking for not-skinny middle-aged black women, so it wasn’t probably a career option.)

All that I’m saying is that if you’re really looking for love up in there, it’s probably not gonna happen for you. And if you’re looking for a career as a professional reality show contestant, then you’re still competing in a sea of crazy. And to be the next “Bachelorette,” you have to actually get close enough to develop real feelings for the guy and get your heart dented, if not broken when you gets dumped. Is this really why you or your folks paid for grad school? Is this really how your young kids want their mom to be seen? CAN YOU LOOK YOUR GRANDMA IN THE FACE? (Or, in the case of the woman who actually brought her Grandma with her, would she be proud of having been publicly associated with you?)

All in all, you don’t have to take your dignity off to have a good time. Jermaine and his hair told me to tell you.

A “keeper” from the ABC tasting

Customers receive a taste of Bottega Vinaia Pinot Grigio from Italy. (Jennifer Podis/The Palm Beach Post)

A spur-of-the-moment decision found me at a wine tasting at the ABC store in Royal Palm Beach recently. For $10, there were more than 60 wines, and even a few spirits, to try. Most of the wines weren’t unusual, or I had tried them before, so I steered towards those that I thought would offer something special based on the place or the price.

As I scribble notes, I’ve created my own rating system with smiley faces or frown faces so I can quickly identify those I want to rush back for before the packing up begins.

Of the 12 wines I tasted, four earned the “Earthy” smiley face:

CBS to launch celebrity-hosted daytime talk show

CBS will take a new view of daytime after the end of “As the World Turns.”

When the soap opera concludes its 54-year run in September, it will be replaced by an hour-long daily talk show with six celebrity co-hosts — all women, an echo of ABC’s popular “The View” series.

CBS announced Wednesday that the hosts of the as-yet untitled daytime show include Sharon Osbourne; Sara Gilbert of TV’s “Roseanne” fame; Holly Robinson Peete from “Celebrity Apprentice;” Broadway actress Marissa Jaret Winokur; Leah Remini of “The King of Queens;” and Julie Chen, who hosts CBS’ “Big Brother” and “The Early Show.”

Reality shows dominate summer prime time ratings

As befitting a lazy week in midsummer, prime-time television was dominated by mentally untaxing fare with dancing, dating and dousings.

None of them involved LeBron James. The Miami Heat forward’s ESPN special to announce his new employer was seen Thursday by nearly 10 million people, higher than all but three prime-time programs on the broadcast networks last week.

Nielsen”s top 15 programs included two editions of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” contest, two editions of CBS’ crowded house reality series “Big Brother” and two editions of ABC’s “Wipeout,” where hapless contestants try to avoid being dunked in water while circumventing an obstacle course. ABC’s “The Bachelorette” was behind only NBC’s talent show as the top reality series.

Christiane Amanpour to take over “This Week,” ABC’s Sunday political show

ABC’s Christiane Amanpour officially joins the Sunday morning talk world on Aug. 1.

ABC said Tuesday that the former CNN international reporter begins as host of “This Week” in less than three weeks. Amanpour was a surprise hire to replace George Stephanopoulos on the Sunday political show, which competes with NBC’s “Meet the Press” and “Face the Nation” on CBS.

With an August start, ABC wants Amanpour to get in the Sunday morning rhythm and get a few shows done before the political season starts in earnest.

Jake Tapper has filled in as host for the past several months.

‘Bachelor’ breakup reveals ugly side of relationships that begin on TV

She said he wasn’t intimate. He said she wasn’t faithful. She called him a fame whore. He called her jealous.

For weeks, the nasty break-up of “The Bachelor” couple Jake Pavelka and Vienna Girardi has been fought in the tabloids. In their latest round of sparring, the pair were back in front of the reality TV cameras where it all began.

“Unfortunately, that’s what one of our arguments looks like,” Pavelka said after a weeping Girardi stomped away from their pre-taped reunion at the end of Monday’s episode of “The Bachelorette” starring Ali Fedotowsky, the former Facebook advertising account manager who chose her job over Pavelka during his “Bachelor” season.

It’s kind of embarrassing.”

More: America Ferrera returns to indie movie fest

ABC has decided to make the current season of Ugly Betty the show’s last.

Zap2It reports the comic soap opera will not continue, ending after a four-season run.

The show was a smash when it debuted in 2006, an Americanized version of an extremely popular telenovela that featured America Ferrera in a breakout role.

But Ugly Betty steadily lost viewers, was relegated to Friday nights, and even a last-minute shift to a strong Wednesday night by ABC couldn’t save it.

According to a statement:

We’ve mutually come to the difficult decision to make this ‘Ugly Betty’s’ final season,” a joint statement from Exec producer Silvio Horta and ABC president Steve McPherson reads. “And are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion. We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell.”

Producers: No sequels, spinoffs for ‘Lost’

Carlton Cuse

When ABC’s drama “Lost” ends in May, it will definitively end — don’t look for any sequels or spinoffs.

The show’s producers said Tuesday they’ve had the final image of the mythologically dense series in mind since the first season, although Carlton Cuse said the last episode hasn’t been written yet. It will air sometime in May.

Cuse and Damon Lindelof were giving away few secrets to the show’s rabid fans at a news conference Tuesday. But they said the show’s sixth and final season will hearken back to its first season in 2004.

One secret they did reveal: actress Cynthia Watros, who played the character Libby before being killed off in the second season, will return this year.
