“American Idol” ATL: Get your pants off the ground!

mary_j_blige400

America, I don’t usually enjoy the “American Idol” audition process, because my finger hurts from fast-forwarding all the idiots they throw in between the actual singers. But the show’s stop in Atlanta was brilliant, both in its talent, and the sheer weirdness of the clowns – at least of the ones I saw. A lot of them got fast-forwarded, because my time is precious, and if I don’t feel like giving it to idiots who know they can’t sing – or should.

The people have chosen vampires.

“The Twilight Saga,” ”True Blood” and “The Vampire Diaries” all sucked up trophies Wednesday at the 36th annual People’s Choice Awards.

“Twilight” won four trophies, including favorite movie, franchise and on-screen team for the dreamy trio of Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, who also picked up the breakout male actor award.

The undead HBO fable “True Blood” and the soapy supernatural CW series “The Vampire Diaries” were respectively selected as favorite TV obsession and favorite new TV drama. Other winners in categories spanning movies, TV and music included “Inglourious Basterds” as favorite independent movie and Lady Gaga as favorite pop and breakout music artist.

If you’re the kind of person who gives concert tickets for holiday gifts — first, you’re really bold; second, this is a good weekend to do it, with a lot of shows in 2010 going on sale.

The Black Eyed Peas, pretty much the best-selling pop band of the last few years, will be coming to Miami’s AmericanAirlines Arena on Feb. 6.

The Peas followed up their huge-selling albums Elephunk and Monkey Business with 2009′s The E.N.D., which has spawned two of the biggest singles of the year, “Boom Boom Pow” and “I Gotta Feeling”.

Rod Stewart bares soul on ‘Soulbook’

The artist: Rod Stewart

The album: Soulbook (J Records)

stewart_lp

The spin: Rod Stewart reinvented himself in the new millennium by exercising his distinctly soulful pipes on classic standards with his “Great American Songbook” collection. Now he returns to his soul roots on “Soulbook,” a thirteen-song collection that represents the soul sounds of Philadelphia, Memphis, and Motown.

Stewart kicks things off with a dramatic rendition of the Four Tops classic, “It’s the Same Old Song” and between that and the last song, he honors soul music’s greats, including The O’Jays, the Temptations, and Sam Cooke. And while it’s a pretty good record, it does have a few minor bumps.

Whenever an artist covers somebody else’s material, it’s important that they offer something fresh in return, and for the most part Stewart delivers. But some of the arrangements are too close to the originals. No one will ever confuse Stewart with Jimmy Ruffin on “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted,” or Brook Benton on “Rainy Night in Georgia,” but he breaks no new ground on either song.

Jackson tribute in Vienna: A thriller gone bad?

It was supposed to be a thriller. Now it just looks bad.

Jermaine Jackson promised some of the planet’s biggest stars would take the stage in front of a 17th-century palace in Vienna for what’s been billed as the major global tribute to Michael Jackson.

So far, though, he hasn’t delivered top acts like Madonna for the Sept. 26 outdoor concert. And two of the supposedly confirmed headliners announced this week — Mary J. Blige and Chris Brown — apparently are out.

Blige’s publicist says she has another commitment. A person close to the situation told The Associated Press in Los Angeles that Brown won’t perform either and a spokeswoman for Natalie Cole suggested she, too, is iffy.

Mary J. Blige, Chris Brown and Natalie Cole will be among the top artists performing at a Sept. 26 Michael Jackson tribute concert in Vienna, organizers said Tuesday.

But they left open the possibility that major stars such as Madonna might still be part of the show that will take place outside a 17th-century palace in the Austrian capital.

“Just hold your horses!” Jackson’s brother Jermaine told reporters at a packed news conference in Vienna’s city hall.

Event promoter Georg Kindel said that up to 25 performers are expected to participate in concert that is being billed as the main global tribute for the King of Pop, who died June 25 in Los Angeles. More names will be unveiled later this week in London and Berlin, Kindel said.

Inaugural party on TV: Serious with bit of goofy

The inaugural concert telecast Sunday on HBO from the Lincoln Memorial had a sense of history and seriousness of purpose – sprinkled with a little frat party.

The latter came when Garth Brooks, backed by a youthful chorus, sang the rock staple “Shout.” Thousands of spectators raised their hands in the time-honored dance.

What was “Shout” doing there? What, for that matter, was Garth Brooks? The crowd didn’t seem to care, perhaps grateful for a little goofiness and a chance to move in the chilly weather.
