At MTV award shows, party matters more than prizes

Katy Perry dripping with green slime. Jack Black, in his underpants, shooting fireworks from his crotch. Sacha Baron Cohen’s alter-ego, Bruno, landing his bare backside on Eminem’s face.

These sure aren’t Oscar moments.

MTV Networks — which include Nickelodeon, Spike, Comedy Central and VH1 — specialize in irreverent awards shows, and they’re serving up a double dose this weekend with Spike’s Guys Choice on Saturday and the MTV Movie Awards Sunday.

Consensus: ‘Brüno’ equally hilarious, squirm-inducing

A couple of weeks ago, we had the “critic-proof” movie, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: Unstoppable no matter how few stars/thumbs-up/etc. it gets.

This week, we have the movie many of us couldn’t wait to see what critics thought of it: Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest comedy/not-really-a-documentary Brüno.

Would they slam it as being too overly stereotypical? Or would they continue to lavish praise on Cohen, as they did with Borat?

Well, Brüno, in which Cohen plays a gay Austrian reporter, is getting a lot of love. It scored 77 percent at Rotten Tomatoes and a 77 at Metacritic.

Many critics enjoyed how Cohen and director Larry Charles continued down the uncomfortable road they started with Borat:

• Sean Larson of LarsonOnFilm.com says the reflection in the mirror Cohen puts up is definitely worth a look: “With Brüno, Sacha Baron Cohen holds up another mirror to American society, and if anything we’ve only gotten uglier since Borat.”

Michael Jackson scene cut from ‘Bruno’

Apparently, there are buttons even Bruno won’t push. The makers of Sasha Baron Cohen’s new film have decided to excise a scene making fun of Michael Jackson, according to Total Film.

In the scene, Bruno calls Michael’s sister, LaToya, and makes fun of her brother’s voice and tries to get his phone number. The scene was in pre-press screenings but won’t make the final print.

• What’s cooler than playing one famous real gangster? Playing two in quick succession.

Fresh off his part as Baby Face Nelson in Michael Mann’s epic Public Enemies, Stephen Graham jumps into the extremely juicy role of Al Capone in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming TV series, “Boardwalk Empire”.

Graham, a Brit who also made a memorable turn in the jarring This is England, talks with Empire about maintaining a New York accent: “I spend all my time with the teamsters, the drivers, because they’re all from New York. I hang around with them and eat Italian food.”

• Amy Adams joins an already strong cast in the upcoming “The Fighter”, according to the MTV Movies Blog. Mark Wahlberg is playing true-life boxer “Irish” Micky Ward, while Christian Bale is Ward’s trainer and brother. Adams is a tough-as-nails paramour for Micky, who won the world welterweight title in London and is well-known for his three epic fights with Arturo Gatti.

Diane Keaton was injured on the set of the film Morning Glory. She bumped her head, but she is OK, according to AccessAtlanta.

However, the circumstances surrounding the injury have me worried. Apparently she was filming a scene in a sumo suit. This can’t end well.

Eminem speaks: knew about Bruno stunt

eminem-bruno-sld

Eminem says he knew full well what he was about to face at the MTV Movie Awards including Sacha ‘ Baron Cohen’s bare butt.

Enimem told the Web site RapRadar.com that the much-talked about stunt was all rehearsed, right down to Eminem’s mock disgust. Says the rapper: “I’m thrilled that we pulled this off better than we rehearsed it.”

Eminem says when he left the show, he went back to his hotel and laughed for three hours, including as he watched the playback.

The rapper calls himself a “big fan” of Baron Cohen, who he said approached him about the gag while he was in Europe.

At Sunday’s live show, the comedian descended from the ceiling on a wire in a fake mishap that ended with his bare hindquarters in Eminem’s face.

Eminem storms out of MTV Awards after butt to face

Eminem apparently has flown the coop from the MTV Movie Awards after a close encounter with Sacha Baron Cohen.

In character as flamboyant fashion reporter “Bruno,” Baron Cohen flew in above Sunday’s award show audience on a wire — and in a pair of feathery white wings and his rear end mostly exposed.

But the comedian crashed into an overhead obstacle, and he was lowered into the audience — right into Eminem’s lap, his bare hindquarters in the rapper’s face.

Bare-butt ‘Bruno’ lands on Eminem seemed visibly upset at the mishap.

Or was it a joke he was in on?

The rapper stormed out with his entourage in tow — and cameras rolling. In 2002, Sparks flew when the rapper was interviewed by Triumph the Insult Comic Dog at the MTV Video Music Awards.

‘Bruno,’ ‘Funny People’ highlight summer comedies

As much as tentpole action films dominate the summer, comedies, too, are a staple of the season.

In warm summer nights, waves of cackling have long floated out of multiplexes playing “Caddyshack,” “There’s Something About Mary” or “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.”

Judd Apatow recalls going with his summer camp to see Bill Murray in “Stripes” as “one of the great moments of my entire life.”

“There are a lot of gigantic movies with budgets well over $100 million that come out during the summer,” said Apatow. “There’s a lot of excitement and spectacle. But I think people also enjoy something less intense and fun and funny.”

Apatow has become a summertime regular, having directed “Knocked Up” and produced “Superbad” and “Stepbrothers” — all of which, he notes, benefited from coming out late in the season when people were “a little burnt-out” by the blockbusters.

On July 31, he’ll release “Funny People,” starring Adam Sandler as a stand-up comedian who finds out he has a terminal disease. Seth Rogen co-stars.
“It’s a human comedy,” said Apatow. “It’s about the normal struggles that people face in their lives. It’s funny and relatable.”

Apatow also produced “Year One” (June 19), which Harold Ramis (“Groundhog Dog,” “Analyze That”) directed. It stars Jack Black and Michael Cera as Roman Empire era wanderers with girl problems.

It’s not the only time-traveling comedy this summer. In “Land of the Lost” (June 5), adapted from the campy ’70s TV series, Will Ferrell plays a scientist who leads his team (including Danny McBride) through a time warp and into an alternate dimension where dinosaurs (among other things) exist.

Then, there’s yet another alter ego of Sacha Baron Cohen’s.

On July 10, he returns with “Bruno,” the lone film this year with an umlaut that American moviegoers are likely to flock to.

“Bruno” is Cohen’s follow-up to “Borat,” which in 2006 earned more than $128 million at the domestic box office and caused a cultural stir. In “Bruno,” Cohen again flings a character from his TV series “Da Ali G Show” into the real world, where director Larry Charles’ cameras capture his interactions with seemingly unknowing citizens.

The culture clash of his gay Austrian fashion reporter might be even greater than that of his Kazakh journalist. Just as entertaining will be the sideshow of Cohen’s in-character interviews and the possible ensuing lawsuits (which resulted after “Borat”).

Coming June 5 with less fanfare and star wattage is “The Hangover,” about a group of friends who find themselves trying to put the pieces together after a wild Las Vegas night. Starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis as a trio of groomsmen looking for their missing friend, it’s a kind of “Dude, Where’s My Buddy?”

“It sticks to a very simple detective format, almost like a mystery, like a Hardy Boys kind of thing,” said Helms. “You’re trying to figure out with the main characters exactly what happened.”

Such summer comedies afford actors and comedians a chance to turn a small part or a cameo into a career breakthrough. (Remember McLovin?)

“The Hangover” is the first major movie role for Helms, who graduated from “The Daily Show” to “The Office” and now to more movies. This summer, he also has a part in “The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard” (Aug. 14) and makes an appearance in the cameo-stuffed sequel: “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” (May 22).

“The Goods,” which is produced by Ferrell and Adam McKay, stars Jeremy Piven, Ving Rhames and James Brolin.

Other anticipated comedies this summer:

• “Extract,” Sept. 4: The Mike Judge (“Beavis and Butt-Head,” “Office Space”) comedy stars Mila Kunis, Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman and Kristen Wiig.

• “Whatever Works,” June 19: Woody Allen returned to New York to shoot this film, starring Larry David (“Seinfeld,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm”).

• “The Boat That Rocked,” Aug. 28: Richard Curtis (“Love Actually”) directs this period comedy about a 1960s illegal radio station.

• “Dance Flick,” May 22: The Wayans brothers satirize the recent slew of dance films like “Step Up.”
