Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston say they’re engaged

bristolandleviBristol Palin and Levi Johnston say they’re engaged — and they haven’t told her parents yet.

Palin, the daughter of 2008 vice-presidential candidate and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, is featured on the cover of Us Weekly with Johnston, holding their son, 18-month-old Tripp.

Bristol Palin tells the magazine that she finds the idea of telling her mother about her engagement “intimidating and scary.”

Kristen Wiig’s recurring character Gilly might not seemed filled with holiday cheer, yet NBC is turning to her to host a “Saturday Night Live” Christmas special.

“SNL Presents: A Very Gilly Christmas” will air Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. The two-hour special, the first for “SNL” since 2002, will be led by Wiig’s Gilly, an ever-smiling Annie-lookalike who delights in violent mischief.

The special will feature new sketches with Gilly and highlights of classic holiday “SNL” sketches.

Wiig, roundly considered a standout performer on the NBC sketch comedy show, has built Gilly into a popular character. In a phone interview Monday, she said part of the fun of Gilly hosting is in her slim vocabulary, which consists mainly of the simple catch-phrase “Sorry.”

“Saturday Night Live”: Now that was funny!

joseph-gordon-levitt-picture-1

I wasn’t going to blog about “SNL”‘s latest episode because, honestly, I fell asleep at 10:30 last night and didn’t wake up until 11:35, missing the cold opening (from what I have read, I haven’t missed anything.)

But as I watched it, I became charmed by guest host Joseph Gordon-Levitt, by guest environmental straight man Al Gore, by guest musician and eager goofball Dave Matthews, and by the fact that the show has finally found a proper use for Kenan Thompson. (And it’s not playing Jennifer Hudson!)

I’m pretty tough on this show – with good reason – so when it has a consistently funny episode, I feel I should note that as well. Gordon-Levitt was a winner, mostly because he’s genuinely talented, not just the hottest person of the moment. I love when kid stars grow up to prove that their initial stardom was about comic timing and the ability to hold the camera’s attention, and not just that they’re cute.

Dear Saturday Night Live: Some positives and negatives

taylor_swift

Dear SNL:

It’s been suggested lately that when I write these blogs about you, that I go out of my way to point out the negative things about you and never, ever write about your good points. I don’t think that’s true, but since I just watched your most recent episode, featuring the delightful Taylor Swift (see, I said she was delightful!), I figured I would clearly mark my kudos and concerns with some helpful suggestions in the form of Dos and Don’ts.
