Taking Your Pulse: Poll do-over reveals Cobb Downtown 16 as local favorite theater

Last year, we asked you what your favorite movie theater in the county was.

We did have a winner: the Muvico Parisian 20 at CityPlace. Unfortunately, we also only had 65 votes.

(Understandable — we had just started Taking Your Pulse, so it wasn’t all that well publicized.)

So we decided to try again this year, and behind a much more respectable 333 votes, we have a new winner.

Your 2011 favorite movie theater is Cobb Downtown 16, in the Downtown at the Gardens center in Palm Beach Gardens.

The Downtown 16 came away with 30 percent of the vote, edging out the Cobb Jupiter 18, which had 27 percent.

Last year’s winner, the Parisian 20, was still a respectable third with 18.9 percent of the vote.

Rounding out the top five were the Cinemark Boynton at 5.7 percent and Boca Raton’s Cinemark Palace 20 at 5.3 percent.

Taking Your Pulse special: ‘Caddyshack’ is your favorite locally-filmed movie, which is nice

Carl Spackler (Bill Murray) takes on The Gopher in 'Caddyshack.'

All these years later, people still love the “snobs vs. slobs” comedy, Caddyshack.

The film, which starred Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield and Ted Knight, topped our Taking Your Pulse poll for favorite locally filmed movie.

Some of Caddyshack‘s scenes were filmed at the Boca Raton Resort & Club (including the dinner and dancing scene), although a great deal was shot at Davie’s Rolling Hills Country Club.

Caddyshack ended up with 44 percent of the vote, followed by Bad Boys II (filmed in Delray Beach) at 16 percent, Marley & Me (mostly in Fort Lauderdale) at 12 percent, and Body Heat (Lake Worth) and Donnie Brasco (Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, among other locations) at 8 percent.

Taking Your Pulse Special!: What’s your favorite movie that was filmed locally?

Jennifer Lopez smiles during the filming of 'Parker' in Palm Beach. (J. Gwendolynne Berry / Palm Beach Post)

UPDATE: Added “Marley & Me”.

With Parker, an action-thriller with Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez, filming around here (and shutting down bridges — click here for more on that), we were curious about the county’s film lore.

What movie, filmed around our area, is your favorite?

Lopez, Statham film in Palm Beach

Is it the steamy Body Heat, which was shot in Lake Worth? The comic romp Heartbreakers, which like Parker was filmed in Palm Beach? Or Bad Boys II, which saw the demolition of a home in Delray Beach?

If you have a favorite that we haven’t mentioned, write in your answer in the spot marked “other”.

Taking Your Pulse: What’s your favorite art house cinema?

Not every movie needs CGI. (striatic / flickr)

Many of us movie-goers like to head down to the cineplex and check out a blockbuster, basically allowing us to turn off the outside world and get completely lost.

But there are other styles of movies floating around out there — movies that tell more subtle stories, that don’t have explosions or CGI and that may or may not have dialogue in a different language.

Generally, the place you can see such movies is the art house cinema. In some cases, the theaters themselves are a little different — they may be remodeled old buildings, or have different kinds of seats. Or sometimes they’re just regular theaters who happen to have management which likes saving at least a screen or two for such movies.

We’d like to know which of these theaters is your favorite. And if you don’t see your favorite on this list, there’s a spot for a write-in vote as well.

We’ll let you know what the results are on Monday.

Taking Your Pulse: CityPlace theater tops county’s movie houses

Two floors of theaters, IMAX screens, a bar and extended concessions were enough for Taking Your Pulse readers to pick the Muvico Parisian 20, CityPlace’s multiplex, as Palm Beach County’s top movie theater.

The Parisian outdistanced two other recently built theaters — the Cobb Downtown 16 in Palm Beach Gardens and the Cinemark Boynton 14.

Some readers did salute the smaller theaters, as Mos’ Art Theaters in Lake Park tied for fifth with the Cobb Jupiter Stadium 18.

Don’t agree? You can always vote — the poll for Taking Your Pulse’s county choices never closes.

In our other poll, we asked what you thought would win the Academy Award for Best Picture. With 37 percent of the vote, you correctly chose The King’s Speech as Best Picture. Black Swan, The Fighter and The Social Network all finished at 17 percent in a tie for second.

Taking Your Pulse: What’s your favorite local theater?

More: See more Pulse checks and polls | Showtimes, theater locations

In spite of all of the options — DVDs, blu-ray, streaming — people love going to the movies as much as they ever did.

And Palm Beach County has some cool choices: We have art houses. We have a drive-in. We have IMAX. We have 3-D. Big screens. Small screens. Multiplexes. Single-screen places.

Well, tell Taking Your Pulse which place really does it for you. Where is the popcorn always fresh, the air always cool (but not TOO cool) and the experience always first-rate?
