Taking Your Pulse: Local rock wins out for favorite SunFest performer

The Kinected, from West Palm Beach, edged out another local band, Dharmata, for the honor of being Taking Your Pulse voters' favorite SunFest act in 2011. (J. Gwendolynne Berry / Palm Beach Post)

Before SunFest began, the buzz may have been about the national acts. But afterwards, there were a few local bands entering the conversation.

And voters in our Taking Your Pulse poll took notice.

Two local rock bands beat out all of the national acts in the race for favorite SunFest performer.

The Kinected — a West Palm rock group who was also lauded back when some of this group’s members were part of Big Bang Radio, who played SunFest in 2006 — led the way with 25.5 percent of the vote.

Meanwhile, Dharmata, the locally based metal band who’ve also played the festival before (back in 2009), finished in second place with 10.6 percent of the vote.

They beat out such well-established musical acts as Jeff Beck (7.3 percent), Earth Wind and Fire (7.1 percent) and Styx (6.6 percent).

Taking Your Pulse: Which SunFest 2011 act was your favorite?

Jeff Beck and Jason Mraz performing at SunFest 2011.

Now that we’ve seen five days of music by the waterfront, we’re curious to know which act you liked the most at SunFest this year.

Did you enjoy the funky soul of Earth Wind and Fire? Or was it the hard-driving rock of Taking Back Sunday? How about Cee Lo Green? Jeff Beck? Styx?

Let us know. We’ll post the results of the poll on Monday.

Taking Your Pulse: Biggest stage is your SunFest fave

In 2002, Bonnie Raitt joined the list of big names who've performed on SunFest's biggest stage, the Bank of America Stage. (Jennifer Podis / Post file photo)

When it comes to the stages at SunFest, our voters want to go big or don’t go at all.

The Bank of America Stage, the biggest of the three, was picked by Taking Your Pulse voters as their favorite stage of SunFest by a wide margin.

It’s not all that surprising, given both the amount of room the crowd can get, the sheer size of the stage itself and the caliber of acts the big stage tends to get.

Taking Your Pulse: What’s your favorite SunFest stage?

Which stage do you like at SunFest?: The huge Bank Of America stage? The bowl-esque Tire Kingdom Stage? The smaller FPL Stage? (Richard Graulich / Palm Beach Post)

When you go to SunFest, you’ve got the choice between three pretty different areas for the festival’s stages.

On the one hand you have the huge expanse at the waterfront near the Bank of America Stage. Then there’s the bowl-esque area surrounding the Tire Kingdom Stage, known as the Meyer Amphitheatre outside of SunFest. Finally, there’s the FPL Stage, located on the south end close to Okeechobee Boulevard, but with the huge benefit of shade thanks to the Phillips Point building.

Which one do you like the most? Let us know.

There’s no “other” choice this time as there are only three stages, though you are always welcome to leave a comment. Thanks.

Taking Your Pulse: ‘Idol’ champ Cook’s fans help him claim ‘top headliner’ vote

David Cook's appearance in 2009 was attended by, among thousands, a real-life princess. (Brandon Cruse / Palm Beach Post)

Apparently, David Cook’s fans didn’t stop voting just because his season of American Idol ended two years ago.

Cook, the winner of Idol in 2008, also was chosen as the favorite headliner of the last five years at SunFest by voters in our Taking Your Pulse poll.

Cook’s 2009 appearance was well-attended, and you might remember that the audience that night included a real-life princess, the niece of the Sultan of Brunei.

Other top finishers included 311 in 2009, Lynyrd Skynyrd in 2006 and James Taylor in 2009.

Write-in votes included Flogging Molly, which we mistakenly left out of our original poll despite a blistering set in 2010, and Eric Clapton, who appeared as a special guest with Sheryl Crow in 2008.

Taking Your Pulse: What’s your favorite SunFest headliner of the last 5 years?

UPDATE: Added Flogging Molly to the 2010 list

It’s about that time — when West Palm Beach’s waterfront becomes the area’s center for music, food and fun during the five-day festival called SunFest.

We’ve all seen a favorite headliner over the years, and we want to know what your favorite in the last five years is. Was it Weezer last year? Sheryl Crow in 2008, when Eric Clapton paid a visit? American Idol stars David Cook in ’09, Daughtry in ’07 or Carrie Underwood in ’06?

(By the way, we know there are those of you that have a favorite from a lot further back than 2006 — quite frankly, we didn’t have enough room to go back any further. However, we’d love to know if you have one from SunFest’s more distant past, so post those in the comments if you want. Heck, I’ll start: I still look back with almost a sense of disbelief that I got to see Bob Dylan in 2003. Was it the Rolling Thunder Revue of 1976? No. But he was still pretty cool.)

Do you have a favorite we don’t list here? We’ve got room at the bottom. But keep in mind, we’re looking for headliners.

Taking Your Pulse: Guanabanas tops local music clubs

EDITOR’S NOTE: The results in this story were taken as of 11:30 a.m., March 7, six days after the poll was open. Our original policy was to leave the poll open to see if people would change their minds as we’d revisit at a later date. However, our policy is changing — all polls open for one week will close as of Monday, the following week.

In the case of this particular story, Propaganda of Lake Worth ended up passing Guanabanas after the the results were delivered on March 7.

The poll’s full results, after it was shut down on April 1, can be found here.

We’ve given Propaganda its due in a special mention here, after the rule was changed on April 1. We apologize for any confusion.

More: Taking Your Pulse polls, results

For our readers, the appeal of a lush tropical atmosphere combined with live music is too good to pass up.

In our latest Taking Your Pulse poll, Guanabanas, located on the water just off A1A in Jupiter, was picked as Palm Beach County’s top local music spot.

Guanabanas beat out Lake Worth’s Propaganda and Bamboo Room and West Palm Beach’s Respectable Street for the top spot. More than one-fourth of our voters chose the waterside restaurant as their favorite.

The Jupiter club tends to get a mix of local bands and regional acts on its schedule, which includes a two-show slate on Saturdays.

We also allowed write-in votes for the first time for Taking Your Pulse. Among your favorite clubs we’d missed were the hard-rocking Home Run Sports Bar off Lantana Road and Chef John’s blues club and bistro in Jupiter.

Just because we have a winner, by the way, doesn’t mean the poll is closed. You can still click here and continue voting — we will revisit this poll in future months.
