Even an experienced party-rocker like Andrew W.K. hadn’t seen anything like it. And given the kind of shows he puts on, he’s seen plenty.

“They’re passing up the guy with the scooter!” Andrew W.K. said. “The scooter!”

And yes, it was a man crowd-surfing, seated on a motorized scooter.

It was just that kind of day — fans at the Warped Tour stop at Cruzan Amphitheatre were simply disinterested in the heat or humidity. They were there to, well, party.

Once again, it’s Warped Tour time, so with it being the dead of summer, and the largest number of bands anywhere, it’s time for the second annual pbpulse.com Warped Tour Survival Guide.

Last year, we had help from the tour’s official “pit reporter”, Tiffany Mink. This time, we get some words of wisdom from The Daily Alligator‘s Thomas Nassiff, who wrote a handy guide Thursday for all of the state’s dates — not just Saturday at Cruzan Amphitheatre, but also Friday in St. Petersburg and Sunday in Orlando.

First, Nassiff suggests you pack everything you need the night before, so you’re not rushing around at the last minute and end up in the back of the line, which start forming a couple of hours before the gates open at noon.

The trio of musicians in VersaEmerge has seen a lot already – national tours, band members leaving, time in the recording studio.

But is this band from Port St. Lucie, which just released its first full-length LP and is playing on this weekend’s Warped Tour, becoming hard-edged veterans of the music business?

Sierra Kusterbeck would have you thinking otherwise really quickly.

VersaEmerge’s lead singer talks about the band’s first trip to producer Dave Bassett’s recording studio in Malibu, Calif., with the enthusiasm of a wide-eyed innocent. Considering she’s just 20, it’s not all that surprising.

"He calls the place Chateau Relaxeau," Kusterbeck said. "It’s on this private road, and we’re winding up the mountain, one wrong turn and goodbye, right? It’s awesome, though. At the end of this five-minute ride, we get out of the car and we’re like, ‘Are we in heaven? I think we are!’ It had this gorgeous view, lots of fresh air."

Zoli Teglas faced a trial by fire right off the bat.

Teglas was in an unenviable spot – he was taking the lead-singer reins of the seminal punk band Pennywise from Jim Lindberg, who’d held down that spot for 19 years.

The first time Teglas stepped on stage, he was in front of 30,000 people. Nerves? You could say that.

“On the very first song, I was nervous about the lyrics, because I had so many words to remember,” Teglas said in a telephone interview. “I was a little tight. I was trying to make it too perfect.”

Seven years ago, Andrew W.K., who was enjoying some success with his debut album, I Get Wet, was enticed to jump onto the 2003 Warped Tour.

The result was what some call one of the more legendary live shows the tour’s ever seen. It was high-energy – both from W.K. and his band and the Warped Tour crowd – so much so that other bands would come to see his shows.

Now, after what must seem like an interminable amount of incidents (some good, some bad), Andrew W.K. is back. And by the looks of things, he might just top the ’03 tour on the 2010 version, which stops at the Cruzan Amphitheatre on July 24.

“How do you top anything in life?” Andrew W.K. asked in a phone interview. “I have gotten better as a performer and doing what I do. I’m definitely better at partying than I was seven years ago. I have that wisdom I didn’t have before. Like many who try to master their craft, I have chosen partying as my life’s work and I think I’ve improved at it.”

Blacklist Rebels: Nashville’s punk side

Not everyone in Nashville owns a lap steel and a twang when they sing.

It may well be the country music capital of the world, but Nashville also has a rock scene — a great one. And it’s all sorts of rock, from the danceable fun of De Novo Dahl to bar band Slack.

And sometimes you end up with guys like the Blacklist Royals, covered in tattoos and sounding more than a little like Social Distortion’s long-lost decendants.

The Royals have an earnestness to their lyrics that even the most hardcore bands can’t approach. And if you’ve got energy left after the Warped Tour show at Cruzan Amphitheatre wraps Saturday night, the Royals just might be the band you’re looking for.

They play Saturday at Propaganda in Lake Worth, along with Belt Buckle Death Sentence, Premo vs. The World and Guerrilleros de Nadie.

A handy, short guide to the Warped Tour

It’s tough to sum up the Warped Tour in one tidy phrase.

It’s not just a bunch of bands getting together – there is usually tons more going on than that, and it’s not a bunch of bands, it’s more than 60 – of a ton of different genres — this year at Cruzan Amphitheatre alone.

That’s hard to keep up with, so I hope today I can at least make things less confusing.

First off, here’s a video survival guide by Tiffany Mink, the Warped Tour’s official “pit reporter”, along with some of the staffers and bands from this year’s tour:
