Mullet fans, rejoice. Your king, Kenny Powers, returns in 2010.
HBO announced it’s renewing Eastbound and Down, the hilarious, brutal comedy with Danny McBride as Powers, a onetime superstar pitcher who tailspinned out of baseball back to his hometown.
The series gained traction mostly through word of mouth/Internet — HBO did very little promotion with the show, compared to some of its other offerings. But an excellent cast, which also included Katy Mixon, Andrew Daly, Ben Best, John Hawkes, Steve Little and Jennifer Irwin, and on occasion, Will Ferrell and Craig Robinson, and great writing and directing helped this show catch a slow but lasting fire.
It’ll be interesting to see where show creators McBride, Best and Jody Hill take the show. When last we saw Kenny, he was high-tailing it out of his hometown, supposedly back to the big leagues but actually headed to nowhere fast with his dreams dashed.
(And by the way, it seems to be a cool time to be Hill right now. Not only is Eastbound coming back, but his movie Observe and Report is getting great reviews.)
Hill spoke with the New York Times about the new season, though he didn’t really let on too much. Actually, he didn’t let on anything.
