You know it’s a weird night when Danny Gokey gives my second favorite performance of the night, because I want that dude gone.
But I have to given The Gokey his props — His understated, gospelly take on “You Are So Beautiful,” a song that Joe Cocker has owned for, like, ever, was gorgeous. Flawless. Moving. Authentic. Most things that he has never been.
Good on you.
On the other hand, Kris Allen, my “American Idol,” rebounded from a decent first performance that was lost amidst the judges yelling at each other about how cool they were to turn a Kanye West song into a Jason Mraz song. If you don’t like Jason Mraz, it’s lost on you. If you think Jason Mraz should be president, like I do, then you think Kris Allen should be your next American Idol. I sure do. He’s an artist, people. He can take a song and interpret it and make it his own. And I totally agree with Simon that giving “Apologize,” a solid but simple piano ballad, to the guy who plays the piano ballads, was stupid. What was he supposed to do with that? Great song, but it’s already what he does.
As for the Glamazon…and you’re gonna yell at me here…his “One” was not flawless. It was shrieky and weird. And, of course, Simon picked that song for him, because if you believe the fix is in, which I do, you know that the judge with the most weight would be picking for the favorite. Well, y’all, he didn’t do it for me in that song.
“Crying,” however, was great, because you could tell from his swagger and that hottie Adam head bob that he loves that thing. I hated the arrangement – it got all cut up for time reasons, and was disjointed. And the backup singer was throwing him off, which was criminal. He hit some bad notes, but it was a really riveting rock performance.
But…and again I can’t believe I am saying this…Gokey impressed the mess out of me. Still want him gone, because I believe Allison should be in his slot. But I’m admitting it…he was great.
But Kris was better.

I think Kris was brilliant last night and I agree that Danny was better than usual. Can’t stand Glam Boy – he is just too over the top. I can’t imagine him making anything that would resemble music that would be played on the radio today (or for awhile anyway). At least nothing I would listen too. Would love to see Kris and Danny in top 2 tonight! Also the look on Simon’s face would be priceless!
I thought Danny was great — at this point of the competition they were all great
What is all the hype with Adam. Although he seems authentic and appreciative, is he idol ready?
Just as Constantine hits the broadway stage, so will Adam, because his singing is theatre ready.
So, Kris, congratulations, for your win.
The most liked doesn’t always win, the one with the modesty that the voters appreciate, and that’s you!
I didn’t get all the praise for Adam’s version of “One” or “Crying.” Overall, it was my least favorite week for Adam. He is so engaging to watch, but that’s about it for me.
I really enjoyed Danny’s “Dance Little Sister.” I think he has the potential to be a great singer, but he seems to have trouble transitioning the peaks and valleys of a song.
Kris has grown so much on this show and surprises me almost every week with his interpretation and delivery of each song. It’s believable and natural. Hoping Kris well on the big night.
