The European clay-court season reaches its climax this week and next with the year’s second Grand Slam tournament, the French Open, from Roland Garros Stadium in Paris. ESPN2 and NBC will offer coverage as four-time men’s champ Rafael Nadal defends his title from the likes of Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and James Blake. On the women’s side, Ana Ivanovic will accept challenges from Maria Sharapova and Venus and Serena Williams, among others.

IndyCar Racing 1-4:30 p.m., WPBF-Channel 25 +146892, WPLG-Channel 10 +166540

Does winning the Indianapolis 500 presage an IndyCar title? Well, if you go by the past four years’ results, it certainly does, as Dan Wheldon (2005), Sam Hornish Jr. (’06), Dario Franchitti (’07) and Scott Dixon (’08) found success at the Brickyard a harbinger of things to come. Dixon returns to defend his title in a 33-car field likely to include Wheldon and Franchitti, plus Helio Castroneves (’01 and ’02 Indy winner), Danica Patrick and Ryan Briscoe.

MLB Baseball 1:30-4:30 p.m., TBS +255863

After a slow start, the Boston Red Sox have picked themselves up, dusted themselves off and gotten on with the business of winning games and contending for the American League East lead. Tonight at Fenway Park, Kevin Youkilis and the Sox wrap up a three-game interleague set against Daniel Murphy and the New York Mets, an otherwise talented team beleaguered by woeful clutch hitting and inconsistent starting pitching.

NASCAR Racing 5-10:30 p.m., WFLX-Channel 29 +797521

IndyCar isn’t the only series running a big race on this day. And by big, we mean length, as top Sprint Cup drivers take to the 1.5-mile Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., for the Coca-Cola 600, the longest race on an oval track in the world. A field that includes Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will come out to compete for the title won last year by Kasey Kahne after leader Stewart blew a tire with three laps to go.

National Memorial Day Concert (2009) 8-9:30 p.m., WXEL-Channel 42 +39811, WPBT-Channel 2 +56291

For the fourth time, Emmy winner Gary Sinise (“CSI: NY”) and Joe Mantegna (“Criminal Minds”) return as co-hosts for this concert honoring the men and women in America’s armed forces. Broadcast from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, this year’s 20th anniversary telecast includes appearances by Colin Powell and actors Katie Holmes, Dianne Wiest and Laurence Fishburne, as well as singers Katharine McPhee, Trace Adkins and Denyce Graves, among others.

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition 8-9 p.m., WPBF-Channel 25 +40873, WPLG-Channel 10 +20453

Ty Pennington and his design team travel to Geneva, N.Y., to meet and assist the Hills, a family that operates a boxing gym for underprivileged teenagers. Unfortunately, their 200-year-old farmhouse is really starting to show its age, a situation the “Makeover” experts try to rectify in seven days while the Hills are vacationing in Cancun.

Million Dollar Password 8-9 p.m., WPEC-Channel 12 +15521, WFOR-Channel 4 +1521

“Ludden?” “Philbin!” Regis returns as host of this familiar but retooled-for-the-new-millennium game show in which contestants team up with celebrities and try to guess the “password” in each round based only on one-word clues. If the star and his partner succeed in multiple rounds, the contestant has a shot at guessing the million-dollar password and collecting the grand jackpot.

MLB Baseball 8-11 p.m., ESPN +597960

Interleague play brings together two .500 teams with playoff aspirations in the finale of a three-game series from the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The Minnesota Twins hope the return of catcher and No. 3 hitter Joe Mauer can light the spark to their offense that has otherwise been absent, while the Milwaukee Brewers would like to see more from Prince Fielder, J.J. Hardy and an attack that through early May had produced just a .249 team average.

Movie: The Last Templar: 9-11 p.m., WPTV-Channel 5 +81540, WTVJ-Channel 6 +89182

Based on a novel by Raymond Khoury, this two-part, four-hour TV movie follows Manhattan archaeologist Tess Chaykin (Oscar winner Mira Sorvino) as she reluctantly teams up with Sean Daley (Scott Foley, “The Unit”), an FBI agent, to discover the lost secrets of the medieval Knights Templar, a mystery that reaches back into the 13th century. Victor Garber and Omar Sharif also star.

Diamonds are more than just a girl’s best friend in this ambitious two-part TV movie, a tale of murder, greed and intrigue set against the often-bloody backdrop of the gem trade. A U.S. senator (Judy Davis) travels to the Congo to investigate her daughter’s murder at a diamond mine and learns that her death may be tied to the ruthless new boss (James Purefoy) of a diamond powerhouse. Derek Jacobi and Stephen McHattie also star. Part 2 airs Tuesday.

When a new witness claims to have information (that may or may not be true), Lilly (Kathryn Morris) and the team reopen the case of the 1978 death of a teenage roller skater who was found in a ravine. Danny Pino, John Finn, Jeremy Ratchford and Tracie Thoms also star in “Roller Girl”; Holland Roden, Allison Smith and John Posey guest star.

Movie: Night at the Museum: 9-11:30 p.m., FX +2316106

Exhibits come to life at the Museum of Natural History, much to the alarm of a security guard (Ben Stiller) who finds himself the target of extinct creatures, in director Shawn Levy’s hugely popular comedy-fantasy. Beyond the plentiful, well-executed special effects, the picture is notable for the solid roles it gives a couple of true showbiz veterans: Dick Van Dyke and Mickey Rooney. Robin Williams, Mizuo Peck, Carla Gugino and Bill Cobbs also appear.

In this episode, Jonas (Dennis Haysbert) discovers that the man the team is counting on to lead them to a nuclear weapons smuggler is engaged in an illicit activity of his own: sex slavery. Jonas promises to rescue his “merchandise,” which could prove tricky if the team wants to keep on the guy’s good side. Robert Patrick also stars in “Sex Trade.”

Gary Cooper’s minimalist acting style is just right for the true story of Alvin C. York, a backwoodsman drawn into World War I combat despite his pacifist stance. York’s shooting skills paid off for the United States as he took on German troops — and Cooper’s work also paid off, since he earned an Oscar for his performance. Howard Hawks directed this 1941 classic, which co-stars Walter Brennan, Joan Leslie, Ward Bond and a young June Lockhart.

Intervention 9-10 p.m., A&E +109390

The Emmy-nominated documentary series opens its seventh season with the story of Gabe, who was abandoned on the streets of Calcutta when he was 3, then adopted by an American family. Although he seemed happy in his new home, Gabe secretly felt like an outsider, leading to rebellion in high school and his use of marijuana, cocaine and eventually heroin. His family believes that his habit is now endangering his very life.

Lou Diamond Phillips also stars.

The fan favorite, the Big Balls, comes with a new wrinkle as well: the Motivator, a massive anvil that pushes players into the Big Balls if they hesitate.

Benson persuades her to tell the truth, but when her husband makes bail, she goes back to him. In an attempt to rescue her, Benson hides out in their building and uncovers another crime. Mike Judge (“King of the Hill”) unleashes his biting and off-kilter comic perspective on the topic of runaway political correctness as personified by the Goodes, a clan whose mantra of WWAGD — “What Would Al Gore Do?” — motivates them to follow a strict vegan diet, drive a hybrid auto, recycle their brains out and do everything they can to reduce their carbon footprint. Judge and Nancy Carell head the voice cast in this animated sitcom.

Let’s hope they’re getting overtime. Then Cutter and Rubirosa (Linus Roache, Alana de la Garza) find another possible suspect and motive: the partner’s son, who was having an affair.

In this new 13-episode reality series, master tattoo artist Thomas Pendelton and his wife-business partner, Monica, take a cross-country road trip in a 1970s tour bus they have transformed into a rolling tattoo parlor. In the premiere, Thomas drops his daughters off at Monica’s mother’s house and later pays his respects to the Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. at its tattoo shop.

A difficult 140-yard wedge shot from heavy rough on the 72nd hole set up a 9-foot putt and enabled Lefty to save birdie and finish one stroke ahead of Tim Clark and Rod Pampling last year. The 2009 field includes those golfers, plus Jim Furyk, Chris DiMarco and Mike Weir, among others.

Jenny Mackenzie, coach of a third-grade girls soccer team called the Mighty Cheetahs, chronicles the experiences of her team as it takes on a team from the boys division after two undefeated seasons competing against girls their age and older. The short film combines game footage with anecdotes from players, parents and coaches. Mackenzie’s 8-year-old daughter, Lizzie, narrates.

While reading to local children, Earl (Jason Lee) reminisces about a recent item on the list for which he and Randy (Ethan Suplee) made amends after Earl found his old friend Raynard (guest star Ewen Bremner) living in the wild with a raccoon for a companion. A high-school coach (Dennis Quaid) who gave up his baseball dream enters into a life-altering bargain with his young players. They agree to work as hard as possible, and if they make it to the playoffs, Coach Morris (Quaid) has to try out for the majors. Rachel Griffiths, Beth Grant, Brian Cox and Jay Hernandez co-star in this 2002 family flick, which is based on a true story.

Playing against type, Michael Douglas is a charmer as a recently widowed president of the United States. Throwing political caution to the wind, he pursues a sexy lobbyist (Annette Bening) despite the effect his actions might have on his upcoming re-election campaign. Aaron Sorkin (“The West Wing”) wrote the Rob Reiner-directed 1995 comedy-drama, which also stars Martin Sheen and Michael J. Fox.

Footwear is the sole — oops, soul — of this new episode, which opens with a minichallenge that requires the designers to create a new print for Olsenhaus, an eco-friendly company that makes vegan shoes. Then in the elimination challenge, the contestants must select an avant-garde pair of high-end shoes from Bergdorf Goodman, then create the perfect outfit to complement them in “The Shoe Must Go On.”

John Sayles, one of film’s most adventurous directors, explores questions of racial and individual identity in this powerful reinvention of the Western genre. A Texas sheriff’s (Chris Cooper) investigation of a 40-year-old skeleton found in the desert reveals a hidden side of his late father, a legendary former sheriff (Matthew McConaughey). There are no easy answers in this superbly acted, tautly woven mystery.

Footwear is the sole — oops, soul — of this new episode, which opens with a minichallenge that requires the designers to create a new print for Olsenhaus, an eco-friendly company that makes vegan shoes. Then in the elimination challenge, the contestants must select an avant-garde pair of high-end shoes from Bergdorf Goodman, then create the perfect outfit to complement them in “The Shoe Must Go On.”

Ghost Whisperer 8-9 p.m., WPEC-Channel 12 +72368, WFOR-Channel 4 +3368

What is it about antiques shops that make them such a receiver for the spirit world? Does anyone else think Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) should consider opening a pet shop? OK, whatever. In this episode, she investigates the sudden death of a high-school athlete whose ghost is following a family that is not her own. Hmm, even in death, kids are always hanging out at somebody else’s house.

Nature’s Most Amazing Events 8-9 p.m., DISCOVERY +807542

The BBC and Discovery Channel, which co-produced the stunning “Planet Earth,” team up again for this six-part series spotlighting Earth’s breathtaking natural diversity as reflected in dramatic seasonal events. “Arctic Summer,” the first episode, looks at how the melting of extensive stretches of sea ice transforms the Arctic into a region of eye-popping beauty.

Movie: The Wind and the Lion: 8-10:15 p.m., TCM +40182455

Scotsman Sean Connery swaps his plaid for a robe in this 1975 drama. He stars as a Moroccan leader who kidnaps an American woman (Candice Bergen) and her kids. He’s really not a bad guy, but a hostage is a hostage, so President Roosevelt (Brian Keith) sends in the troops. Simon Harrison, Polly Gottesmann, Geoffrey Lewis and John Huston co-star.

Howie Do It 8:30-9 p.m., WPTV-Channel 5 +2184, WTVJ-Channel 6 +9946

Howie hires a new assistant and gives him a daunting first task: firing the old assistant. A man takes a job delivering singing telegrams, not knowing it comes with a mandatory banana costume. A woman competes on a charades-style game show, unaware that everyone else knows the answers in advance. Howie shows ghastly people skills while posing as a Las Vegas hotel concierge.

Un-Broke: What You Need to Know About Money 9-10 p.m., WPBF-Channel 25 +62374, WPLG-Channel 10 +67436

Never mind the global financial meltdown (if you can). This one-hour crash course in the basics of “Money 101” features “Good Morning America” financial adviser Mellody Hobson talking to Will Smith, Samuel L. Jackson, Seth Green, the Jonas Brothers and others to explain credit cards, mortgages, the stock market indexes, investing, 401(k) plans and more.

If you think it’s easy to be the child of superheroes, ask the young man (Michael Angarano) who’s in that situation in this comedy-fantasy from Disney. Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston play his superpowered dad and mom, who aren’t aware that he may lack their abilities as he enters a special school. A villain’s reappearance forces him to rise to the occasion. Co-stars include Lynda Carter, Danielle Panabaker and Bruce Campbell.

Clint Eastwood, James Garner, Donald Sutherland and Tommy Lee Jones have the right stuff in this 2000 adventure. They play former astronaut wannabes who were cheated out of their chance to go into space in the late 1950s. An old satellite is on a collision course with Earth, and only engineer Frank Corvin (Eastwood) can save the day. He rounds up his old flyboy buddies to boldly go where no senior citizen — except John Glenn — has gone before.

Movie: The Great Train Robbery: 10:15-12:15 p.m., TCM +1276344

Based on a Michael Crichton novel — no dinosaurs involved, thank you very much — this 1979 drama stars Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland as thieves hanging around England. Their goal this time around is a gold shipment on a train. Lesley-Anne Down, Alan Webb, Pamela Salem and Malcolm Terris co-star.

Movie: Dirty Harry: 8-10:15 p.m., AMC +1976566

“You’ve gotta ask yourself a question: ’Do I feel lucky?’ Well, do ya, punk?” Clint Eastwood first played the maverick San Francis cop in this 1971 melodrama about his search for a psychotic killer (Andy Robinson). Though the four sequels (to date) have diluted the character’s impact a bit, he’s in prime form in this original edition, directed by Don Siegel. Reni Santoni, Harry Guardino and John Vernon also appear.

“Surviving the Serengeti” follows the annual migration of more than a million wildebeest, along with zebra and gazelle, across the Serengeti Plains of Tanzania. The episode includes an eruption from Ol Doinyo Lengai, the region’s only active volcano, captured using a gyro-stabilized helicopter mount.

Movie: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde: 8-10 p.m., TCM +1934498

Arguably the ultimate story of split personality, the Robert Louis Stevenson classic gets another screen workout in this 1941 version starring Spencer Tracy in the title role — er, roles. Scientist Henry Jekyll uses a series of potions on himself until they alter him completely, converting him into the murderous Hyde. Co-stars include Ingrid Bergman, Lana Turner, Peter Godfrey and C. Aubrey Smith.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit 9-10 p.m., WPTV-Channel 5 +48837, WTVJ-Channel 6 +46479

Benson and Stabler (Mariska Hargitay, Christopher Meloni) begin to question the story of a teenager (guest star Ellen Woglom) who returns home after having been missing for four years, claiming to have been kept as a sex slave. One of the girl’s sisters, who launched a Web site asking for help finding her, is relieved to see her long-lost sibling, but her other sister seems annoyed with her return. When the victim’s answers don’t add up, suspicion turns inward.

Movie: Maneater: 9-11 p.m., LIFETIME +294634

She’s probably best known for playing a smart yet neurotic doctor on “Scrubs,” but Sarah Chalke tackles a change-of-pace role in this new two-part, four-hour adaptation of Gigi Levangie Grazer’s (“The Starter Wife”) novel, which casts the actress as shallow Hollywood socialite Clarissa Alpert, who sets her cap for Aaron Mason (Greg Pitts), one of the most in-demand movie producers in town. Gregory Harrison also stars.

Law & Order 10-11 p.m., WPTV-Channel 5 +41924, WTVJ-Channel 6 +49566

A slain police officer, a dead body and a guy who thinks the president is his daddy. Something tells us this isn’t an open-and-shut case. Lupo and Bernard (Jeremy Sisto, Anthony Anderson) investigate a troubled cop who took hostages at gunpoint and was shot dead by fellow officers. In his apartment, they find valuable documents and another body, which leads them to a guy who’s trying to prove he’s a president’s illegitimate son in “Illegitimate.”

Pushing Daisies 10-11 p.m., WPBF-Channel 25 +36672, WPLG-Channel 10 +83924

ABC has canceled this wistful comedy-fantasy series, but the network throws some (pie) crumbs to fans by airing three previously unseen episodes. The first finds Ned (Lee Pace) swearing off waking the dead, so Emerson and Chuck (Chi McBride, Anna Friel) team up to investigate the murder of a window dresser. Kristen Chenoweth also stars in “Window Dressed to Kill.”

Movie: Escape From Alcatraz: 10:15-12:45 p.m., AMC +9769721

Shot on Alcatraz Island, this film is based on the true story of the only escape from the maximum-security prison built on an island surrounded by shark-infested waters. Clint Eastwood stars as an inmate with an extensive track record of prison breaks, belying the self-important warden’s (Patrick McGoohan) claims that Alcatraz is escape-proof. Danny Glover plays an inmate in his first screen appearance.
