By Michelle Licudine and Gail Blair   |  So You Think You Can Dance, TV  |  July 10, 2009

Ta-daa! We now have our Top Ten! Starting next week the power shifts to all of us to keep our favorite dancer in the competition. Breaking the couples up will expose the weak links and highlight those who were overshadowed by their partner.

Nigel sure had his hands full last night. First announcing that the Michael Jackson tribute was a no-go because the (evil) recording empire would not release the rights to use MJ’s music, then he swiftly eliminated a huge crowd favorite, only to turn around and hire him for the So You Think You Can Dance national tour….all this remind you, while celebrating his 60th birthday! Well played sir, well played.

Group performance

“We are a part of a rhythm nation!” Good job, we like it when the dancers can make full use of their performance area, pushing it out to the staircase, rafters, etc.

Fashion Cat critique

She’s rummaged through her vintage pieces again. A Grecian/60′s inspired shift dress with hella big keyhole detail. Whaddup with the minimal jewelery selection?  Well, except for the earrings…the last place you’d need a bauble considering the aforementioned size of the keyhole. (Get a gladiator or caged heel woman! Give the friggin’ strappy heels a rest. – G.)

(More recap after the jump.)

Guest performances

An unimpressive mash-up.

An unimpressive mash-up.

Promo video for season 6 airing this fall focused on a Travis-esque dude in terrible harlequin pants and a bow tie. Apparently, we’re supposed to look forward to more of this “whimsy”.

Kelly Rowland took a break from her duties on reality show, The Fashion Show. Isaac Mizrahi needs to keep her on a shorter leash. It was a mess. We both wanted her outfit, but DJ David Guetta looked ready for a night at Blue Martini in Boca. Who wants a long-in-the-tooth European house DJ leading them into a clap along?

Bottom 3

Short of America having a simultaneous brain aneurysm, we knew Brandon and Janette were safe. But again, and the reason alludes us, Pleasantville couple, Randi and Evan were safe. Why? WHY? Remaining safe couple, Kayla and Kupono, seemed tremendously relieved.

This meant Jason and Caitlin were in the bottom for the 3rd time, along with 2nd time unlucky Philip and Jeanine and 1st timers Ade and Melissa. Ultimately, Caitlin’s pointless kicking, tumbling and cutesy routine and Philip’s lack of technique in other genres got them cut from the competition, but not the tour.

Caitlin and Philip are eliminated.

Caitlin and Philip are eliminated.

We think we have the right top 10, albeit the least diverse group of all seasons (7 out of 10 dance contemporary). Therefore, it was smart for them to keep hip-hopper Phillip for the tour — he’s a main attraction. Of course, that means we’ll have to see Caitlin, too, because they had to be fair. Good for them both.

Drinking game tally

Rolls: 3
Props: 7

Live Singing! Make a toast.

Are you happy with the Top 10?
