“Right now, I’ve got my Target wig on, and a T-shirt and dirty Keds, and after I talk to you I’m gonna go to Target because my husband needs underwear, and I need bras.”
There is so much in that sentence that neatly defines proudly loud radio host and newly-minted television talk show diva Wendy Williams. There’s the familiar “just us girls” comfort that lets her share her undergarment shopping needs and the admission that she meets those needs at Target, just like the rest of us. She’s also fabulous enough to not only wear a wig to go buy underwear, but specifies her faux hair wardrobe based on her destination. (Just like I always suspected Diana Ross does!)
That combination of earthiness and glamour set the mood for “The Wendy Williams Show,” which premieres Monday at 5 p.m. on WFLX, the local FOX affiliate. With more than two decades in New York radio, the 6-foot tall Williams briefly appeared on VH-1 with a sort of televised version of her radio show. That was followed by her full-fledged chat show with an audience, celebrity guests and a disco ball, that had a trial run last summer in New York, Detroit, Dallas and Los Angeles. Her big, bawdy, sisterly style proved a hit (she compared weaves with Vivica A. Fox and refrained from pimp-slapping reality show hopper Omarosa after O. tried to provoke a fight), and Williams expanded her empire, which already includes several books, to the rest of the country on July 13. She’s already dished about QVC with style guru Carson Kressley, cooked with delightfully crazypants “Real Housewives of Atlanta” cast member Nene Leakes, and had a birthday cake made by “Cake Boss” star Buddy Valastro.
Here’s what you need to know when West Palm catches up next week:
— How she’d introduce herself to people who have never been experienced her before: “I”m out of New York. I have a big personality, a big presence. Hopefully the show will do big things.”
— She says what she means, no matter what: “I am a free spirit- I am a wild stallion. I don’t like to be confined. I want to run wild with my mane and my clothes.”
— That mane changes to fit the occasion: “The Target wig is as long as the show wig. It looks peachy…how would I explain that? Like Jennifer Aniston’s hair, just peachy. It blows, it moves. I brush it every other dat. The show wig is like couture Versace.”
— Taking the Wendiness nationwide: “I was never concerned (that she might not translate nationally), and I say that not in a cocky way. When you see a six-foot-four woman – six-four, because I love my heels! – coming your way, you might think ‘She’s so over the top,’ but in actuality, I have the same American values (others might). I put my family first…I’m going to Target. My garage door paint is peeling. I’m no different. I’m just a woman from New Jersey.”
— Much like Stuart Smalley, she is a caring nurturer, but not a liscensed therapist: “You see me, 100 percent, during the ‘Ask Wendy’ segment (where she dishes advice from members of the audience). I am not a professional advice giver. I’m a 45-year-old woman, a college graduate, a mother, and someone who’s been married 11 years. Most of the time, when you meet someone who is 45, you’re meeting someone who has been through some trials and tribulations, but has gotten up instead of staying laying down. You’re only as good as how far you can (rise) back up.”
— The difference between this and her VH-1 show: “This is me in totality. I love embracing exactly who I am. On the radio, I might wear UGGS and leggings, but on TV, I get to wear pencil skirts and things I love. This is the new adventure in my life. I’m totally curious. I love a challenge.”
— What’s in store for the show: “My talk show is our place to come and talk about the issues. I want the celebrities to come and promote their product…I consider myself a pop culture junkie…The niche I fill is regular old fun. And in between the fun, I hope people would take a little common sense and practical knowledge out of it. It’s not heavy. I love Rachel Maddow. But I’m not Rachel Maddow.”

I first saw this show and it sucked big time. The program does not flow, it is pretty sad (not funny at all), and she can barely read her skits with any finesse.
Show sucks
Can we put Opera in this body???
I’m a New Yorker and have heard Wendy in action on the radio.. she proven herself in the New York market and other smaller markets on the east coast… It’s Entertainment and she’s good at what she does. I was a little disappointed at her first episode but it’s a different area from her. She’s going from radio to TV which is very different but her last two episodes showed improvement. I wish Wendy many blessing and success in her new venture. No Hate from…
