Three local girls wowed the nation on “Live with Regis and Kelly” Friday morning, showcasing their flexible skills Cirque du Soleil style on the show’s Wild and Wacky Talent Contest.
The three Port St. Lucie residents and trained gymnasts submitted their homemade, gymnastics video more than a month ago for a shot at the grand prize of $20,000 and a lifetime supply of Trident gum.
Cassidy Flynn, 13, Chyna Degginger, 14, and Shelby Parker, 12, shot the minute-long video in Shelby’s Port St. Lucie living room in July, never expecting it to hit the airwaves. Friday morning they awoke in a state of excitement when they learned their video beat out thousands of entries, landing them a spot as contest finalists.
“I’m extremely excited,” said Cassidy, a St. Anastasia eighth-grader who’s been getting congratulatory calls from surprised family members across the country. “All of my friends and family are really proud of me.”
In all, it took two days of practice and planning to shoot the video, titled “The 3 Musketeers,” which features the girls performing heart-stopping tricks, splits, flips and handstands. The video is suitably featured in the “Bent Out of Shape” category, along with four other gymnastics-style acts and child contortionists.
“Since the economy’s so tough and there wasn’t a whole lot to do over the summer, the girls decided to make the video and enter the contest,” said Maria Flynn, Cassidy’s mother and an avid “Regis and Kelly” viewer. “I’m so proud. It’s such a positive thing for all of them.”
Throughout the contest, which started Aug. 23, show hosts Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa will be looking for talented individuals with extraordinary abilities that shock and awe viewers and voters.
After the viewer votes have been counted, from Sept. 7-10, Regis and Kelly will announce the winners in a variety of categories each day. The morning show’s at-home viewers will vote once again, but this time for the grand prize winner.
