Matt

Matt -- the kind of guy who'd suddenly change up the 'Free Parking' rule in Monopoly to win.

After Matt won Head of Household, he received a letter from his wife in which she discussed her illness. This convinced the other house guests, even the skeptical doctor Andrew, that Matt truly wanted to win Big Brother to pay for cancer treatment.

That was it.

I realized why I find Big Brother 12’s Matt so offensive, and perhaps why I cannot watch the show until he is evicted.

Matt is the kind of person who asked all the rules of a game at recess, and then won at Four Square because the child in the first square didn’t exclude “cherry bombs,” his term. Everyone knows cherry bombs win the game, but it’s no fun winning if rounds take 1.2 seconds.

Maybe it’s my controlling personality, but I cannot abide people who agree to something (be it to play a Four Square or to compete on Big Brother) but constantly renegotiate terms everyone else seems able to accept.

But Matt goes even further.

His method of bending the rules requires cooperation from outside. When it was simply a lie about his dying wife, I thought it underhanded but would admit, begrudgingly, its genius.

Her collusion in the lie is cheating; only four can play Four Square at a time.

House guests are not allowed an ally who does not have to adhere to any of the rules of Big Brother and over whom they have complete control. The fact that they are isolated from society and to win must use the resources (primarily human) within the house (and within themselves) is the premise of the — wait for it — GAME.

Maybe CBS thinks they have a good villain in Matt.

But, CBS, villains with staying power play by the rules and know their roles, even when those roles are ridiculous: Wile E. Coyote continues to purchase faulty Acme products and the Joker explains his scheme to Batman, assuming the hero won’t escape this time.

Eventually, people (most notably viewers) will tire of Matt, and he will be ignored.

One might argue that Matt’s prerogative to play by his own rules is proof of his genius.

I will concede that point if he gets off my television.

Also: Matt nominated Andrew and Kathy for eviction, neither have strong allies. I presume the nominations will stand and Kathy will go home because she voted to evict Matt last week.

Lying is in no way, shape, or form breaking any rules set by Big Brother. Everybody lies in the BB house, Matt’s lie is just bigger than most. I doubt it will work for him because nobody gets a pity vote in BB, but he has every right to say anyghing he wants to. I just don’t understand the outrage you and others seem to feel. It’s just a game and this is how he’s choosing to play it. There is no right or wrong way to play BB, and to vilify him over this is ridiculous and just as outrageous.

i like the lie. I think it is part of the game. But you have to wonder in the final 3 would you really pick Matt to take to the jury? That the only question I have. I’m not going to be sitting beside a man who’s wife is dying and think I’m going to win.

I also don’t understand the outrage. I liked when Johnny Fairplay lied in Survivor (he also had outside help!) and I like that Matt is trying it too. I do not think it will help him because he kind of has that weasel vibe and everyone has picked up on it in the house. But good for him for actually playing the game instead of sitting back and doing nothing.

It will backfire on him. I agree that lieing is part of the game, but Jeff on Survivor doesnt even consider Johnny Fairplay a real player…hero or villian, he’s nothing and I campare this lie to be similar to that kind of thing. I can’t wait for Matt to go either, he seems to think he’s a leader. We’ll see when he’s not HoH, but I don’t think Rachel has a major problem to put him up this week..maybe she’ll see a reason..I hope so.
