Kenny and date Tracy arrive at Cutler's BBQ

Kenny and date Tracy arrive at Cutler's BBQ

Oh man, is Kenny Powers actually beginning to show heart?

After three weeks of little if any behavior beyond his immature bluster, Kenny actually began to show signs that he’s recognizing the reality of his situation in this week’s “Eastbound and Down”. That he’s got to start looking past his failed major league career and into a new life.

I can’t believe I’m writing about a comedy.

But I am — a comedy where Kenny’s “minion”, Stevie, has created a DVD with every bell and whistle ever approached by iMovie pimping Kenny to every major-league club (though I’m not sure how cutting a baseball with a machete proves how ready you are for the big leagues again).

Where Kenny, upon finding out he hasn’t been invited to a barbeque at the home of the object of his desire, April, acts with brilliantly immature aplomb.

And where his romantic rival, Cutler, invites Kenny into the pit of vipers and ends up the one bitten.

Let me explain: Cutler brings the bemulleted ex-baseball hero into a clean-cut barbeque with a church group, yet it’s Cutler who ends up getting drunk with Kenny’s date. It’s Cutler who ends up mouthing off to April. It’s Cutler who ends up making an idiot of himself.

So much so you almost forget that Kenny and April made out.

Now, Cutler does mouth off to Kenny, reminding him that he’s the principal, Kenny’s the teacher, and that’s not changing any time soon. And that results in a scene where Kenny rides his Jet-Ski, resplendent in white shirt and jeans (which would’ve looked GREAT in the DVD).

Which in turn leads to scenes of doubt and realization from Kenny. And reminds you that there’s more to this profane comedy than meets the eye.
