The two-hour season finale of ‘Grey’s’ left me with more questions than answers. I have to give it to Shonda Rhimes and her team of writers they sure know how to pull on the emotional heartstrings. With a tissue in my hand, I sat tense anticipating what would happen.

In the beginning of the show Meredith says, “When something begins, you generally have no idea how it’s going to end”. This is an example of foreshadowing at it’s best.

The show starts off with Izzie needing to make a decision – should she have what can be a life saving operation and possibly leave her with no memory or should she continue through the painful radiation with no promise of survival?

In the end she decided to go with the surgery all seems well initially until she continues to repeat herself her short-term memory is gone. High-strung Karev lashes out at her after the argument she seems to have snapped out of it and her memory returns. They embrace and seconds later she flat lined.

Izzie, prior to her surgery had filled out a DNR (do not resuscitate) form. Her final wish was in the event of a tragedy she did not want extreme measures taken to revive her. After a few moments her friends and chief decided to ignore the DNR and attempt to save her.

Derek and Meredith have an impromptu wedding of sorts. They exchange vows they wrote on a post it note. Among their promises to each other is to always love each other even when they are “old and smelly”. They each sign the post it and pronounce themselves husband and wife.

In a surprise twist, O’Malley announces that he will be leaving to Iraq inspired by Owen and the bravery of a solider who voluntarily had his leg amputated in order to return to duty. George enlists himself into the army as a trauma doctor. The residents plan an intervention to try and change his mind.

In the midst of all this drama a trauma patient is brought in completely disfigured. He had saved the life of a stranger.

He is in critical condition; unable to speak and identify himself – he is listed as a John Doe patient. The girl on the bus stop with him refuses to leave she tells Meredith he is her prince he saved her life without even knowing her.

It isn’t until towards the end that we discover John Doe is actually O’Malley. He traces 007 in the palm of Meredith’s hand, realizing it’s O’Malley she rushes out and screams to the rest of the residents that John Doe is in fact their friend O’Malley.

O’Malley is rushed into the OR while the attempts to save Izzie’s life are failing.

Things in the operating room seem just as eery for O’Malley. In the midst of the chaos, it goes into a scene showing both O’Malley and Izzie meeting at an elevator, Izzie inside O’Malley outside. Izzie was dressed in the ball gown outfit she was wearing when she bid farewell to Denny and O’Malley wearing a military uniform.

At this point of the show I can barely breathe and am fully out of tissues. This was the ultimate cliffhanger.

Do both Izzie and O’Malley die? My thoughts – Izzie dies and O’Malley survives.

TR Knight wanted better writing material and this might be it for him. A season filled with the up hills of an intense recovery and a possible love interest with the mystery girl from the bus stop.

We won’t know for certain until next season.

  1. Justice says:

My thoughts… George dies and Izzie survives. As we all have heard both of them wanted out of there contracts. Mabey they both will die.

  2. Kate Klein says:

Izzy dies (she’s probably under contract to do a bunch of fluffy cutsey movies), O’Mally survives but because of the horrible disfiguring injuries, he will have to undergo multiple plastic surgeries and then can be played by another actor! ….Or, he survives, and still goes to Iraq — but perhaps he’s sticking around for 1 more season….. if he likes the writing, perhaps he’ll stay. Personally I won’t miss either of them.

  3. Steph T. says:

I thought I read somewhere a while back O’Malley is in a new, upcoming TV show. If true, it would make sense for him to die. I predict Izzie lives…

  4. Jen says:

I make no predictions …. I hope they both live :o)
When George scribbled 007 into Meredith’s hand I gasped so loudly I almost woke my sleeping daughter lol
Tugging at the heartstrings is an understatement for this finale…which i give two thumbs up!! one of the best finale’s I have seen in a long time.

what i wanna know is…what’s gonna happen with sloan and lil grey … will they get married? hmmmmm
