The Wall Street Journal is reporting that NBC will pay Conan O’Brien nearly $40 million to walk away from The Tonight Show.

O’Brien’s exit agreement could be set as soon as today.

According to the Journal, O’Brien wouldn’t be permitted to bad-mouth his former bosses, nor can he work on another TV show until the year is out.

The Journal adds that O’Brien will earn $32.5 million, while his staff of approximately 200 people will receive the remaining $7.5 million in severance.

Meanwhile, Jay Leno told his audience that he might be back on at 11:30 during his monologue on his NBC show Monday, according to the New York Post.

Here are his remarks, including calling O’Brien “a nice guy, family guy, great guy”:

Gawker has put together a compendium of video clips, highlighting Leno’s statement, David Letterman’s cracks about Dick Ebersol, O’Brien singing his displeasure about network executives, and even some jabs from Craig Ferguson and Jimmy Fallon’s show (though not Fallon himself, who has taken the high road throughout).

This is obscene! You have GOT to be kidding. I am done with NBC. $40 MILLION!!! Seriously??????? People everywhere are losing jobs. Some don’t get any severance; some do. Another excess of being a celebrity. They should be ashamed of themselves. And so should Leno and O’Brien.

  3. anita says:

Wish they would BOTH go, don’t care for either one of them!

  4. Wow says:

40 million dollars for someone who is not even funny. Where does this money come from??? All the hell people are going through with health insurance, losing jobs, cutting back on pay, not being able to feed their families and a lot more and they are paying this man 40 million dollars for nothing. What is the world turning in to??? there has got to be a way to stop foolishness like this this is pure greed.

Most obscene – that 200 staffers share 7.5 mil between them. Thats not even 40 grand a piece with California’s cost of living.

Most obscene part 2 – that neither of these guys or NBC execs realize The Tonight Show just isn’t that relevant anymore.

Conan, Leno, Letterman—so 60′s. John Stewart and Chelsey Handler are the only late shows I enjoy. Their humor is so much more current and they are smart. So tired of “top ten” and “skits”.
The Amazing Kreskin died with Ed and Johnny, so should the Late Show.

  8. Sotoya says:
