The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he’s bedeviled by a fly in the White House.
PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.
“We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals,” PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. “We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals.”
During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama’s conversation with correspondent John Harwood.
“Get out of here,” the president told the pesky insect. When it didn’t, he waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked it dead.
“Now, where were we?” Obama asked Harwood. Then he added: “That was pretty impressive, wasn’t it? I got the sucker.”
Friedrich said that PETA was pleased with Obama’s voting record in the Senate on behalf of animal rights and noted that he has been outspoken against animal abuses.
Still, “swatting a fly on TV indicates he’s not perfect,” Friedrich said, “and we’re happy to say that we wish he hadn’t.”
Deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said the White House has no comment on the matter.
Here we go again any little thing against the black president PETA get real there’s a lot more animals being abused than to talk about this man swatting a fly, people have been swatting flys for years. Give the man a freakin break. I’m sure all the other presidents have stepped on ants and killed flys and roaches or whatever else type of insect they see. If you want to protect insects then close down all the pest control companies. I don’t see you going after Orkin, Hulett etc. PETA GET REAL!!!!!!!
PETA or is it PETI (People for the Ethical Treatment of Insects)? Some of us (that earned passing grades in school) know that a fly is an insect, not an animal. PETI, hope the mosquitos eat you alive, don’t you dare wear repellant or swat them. May your next picnic be next to a fire ant mound. I hope your children provide a nice home for lice and you better do nothing about it. The lucky tick that adheres to you should have along and prosperous life. Effin morons.

I’m a memeber of PETA, and an active animal rights activist, but I do agree they went a bit to far. They’re just embarrassing themselves when they do things like defend a fly; it doesn’t make people respect them, just laugh. PETA, can you please try and focus on bigger problems than the president swatting a fly? Like maybe making him look at endangered species more closely? It’s almost like you’re wanting people to laugh at you.

I felt that fly’s pain as it fell to the floor, then President Obama singling out the fly to pick on it in its death fall. People don’t understand that insects are a part of nature. We have to learn to live with the fly, not destroy them. PETA has it right! Keep fighting PETA!

All of this over a stinking, known germ carrying insect. Leave the man alone to deal with more important issues than having to humanely catch a fly to release later. Kudos to the president for his actions.
They can have all my flies, come get them. I think Obama handled the fly as humanely as possible. Looked quick, doubt the fly had much time to feel pain. Faster than suffering with spray. Get over it PETA!

You have got to be kidding me.
The fly intentionally touched the President without the President’s consent. That’s battery. The fly continued to batter the President, so the President used reasonable force under the circumstances to prevent the continued crime against his person. If you wish to extend the same rights that humans have to insects, then you will have to accept that the insects/animals/etc. will have the same corresponding social obligations, i.e., not to batter others. Any reasonable person inherently knows the numerous flaws in PETA’s fundamental principles – that animals are morally equivalent to humans.
It’s a known fact that blacks hate flys.

I think all of us who think that PETA should get a life need a life of our own, as we seem to have plenty time to critique others.
