The Primetime Emmy Award nominations are a lot like the box of chocolates Forrest Gump once talked about: You never know what you’re gonna get.
What you do know is that there will be some surprises and a few snubs. That trend held steady as the nominations for the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning.
Family Guy, for instance, became the first animated show to earn a best comedy nomination since The Flintstones in 1961. For years I’ve been saying Family Guy is one of the funniest show on TV. Not just one of the funniest animated shows. It’s one of TV’s funniest comedies. Period. Glad to see the academy voters finally took notice.
Other surprises included nominations for HBO’s quirky series Flight of the Conchords for outstanding comedy (Jermaine Clement also earned a nod for best actor in a comedy) and Sarah Silverman (Comedy Central’s Sarah Silverman Program) for best lead actress in a comedy.
Some high-profile snubs included FX’s The Shield, Michael Chiklis in The Shield, HBO’s True Blood and 24’s Kiefer Sutherland — although Sutherland was nominated for best lead actor in a miniseries or movie for his role in 24: Redemption. Most shocking was the no love for The Shield or Chiklis. The show was terrific in its final season and so was its chrome-domed star. And I don’t get how 24 got overlooked for best drama after one of its best seasons ever. Fox’s rock ‘em, sock ‘em thriller would’ve been my pick over House.
HBO lead the way with 99 nominations. NBC came in second with 67. NBC’s 30 Rock earned 22 nods and Mad Men, last year’s best drama winner, nabbed 16, including nominations for stars Jon Hamm and Elizabeth Moss.
Most of the nominations included the usual suspects: Lost, The Office, Dexter, Hugh Laurie, Tina Fey, Glenn Close, Mariska Hargitay, Holly Hunter, Alec Baldwin, Tony Shalhoub and Kyra Sedgwick.
The Emmys are scheduled to be awarded on Sept. 20 on CBS.

is it me, or does tina-fey resembles Sarah Palin?
Tina Fey wishes she looked like Sarah Palin!
Oh, I HIGHLY doubt that.
People know Tina Fey more now because of Sarah Palin and if she did not like how Sarah Palin looks she would have changed her hairdo and not wear the same glasses. She sure is enjoying all the money she is making consistently making fun of Sarah Palin. I will have to agree with Tricia. Can’t wait for someone to be BRAVE enough to look like and poke fun of Michelle Obama everyday.
Dana said “if she did not like how Sarah Palin looks she would have changed her hairdo and not wear the same glasses.”
Except that Tina Fey doesn’t wear the same glasses, nor share the same hairdo but when she is playing Sarah (I’m like a point guard) Palin.
As far as making fun of Michelle Obamba, Maya Rudolph has played her on Saturday Night Live, as well as Erica Ash on MadTV.
