Mike Clarey found his spot at 3 this afternoon on the side of the stage at Centennial Square.
He had his Sharpie and his copy of Black Sabbath Vol. 4 in hand, and wore his T-shirt for Ozzfest ’99.
He was ready for Ozzy.
Ozzy Osbourne, the former Black Sabbath lead singer, successful solo artist, reality-TV star, and now author, came to Palm Beach County for a busy day of honors and book signing.
“I think it’s great that this is happening,” said Clarey, a Wellington resident. “He’s brought a lot of revenue into our county and a lot of great bands, and (Ozzfest) has also broken a lot of big bands.”
Osbourne was given the key to the city of West Palm Beach by Mayor Lois Frankel, who even noted in her remarks that she was a big fan of The Osbournes, the VH1 reality show which introduced the world to his wife Sharon and his kids Jack and Kelly.
“We love Sharon,” Frankel said.
Osbourne accepted the key and made a few quick remarks of his own, including one about seeing if Ozzfest — which was bumped down from a tour to a single-date show in Dallas in 2008, and then canceled in 2009 — could return to Palm Beach County this year.
Buzz 103.1 Morning Buzz host Jeremy Loper, whose show arranged the ceremony, said he was taken aback seeing the fans salute the rocker.
“He’s given so much for so long, and we just thought it was a great idea to honor him,” Loper said.
Hundreds cheered and chanted “Ozzy! Ozzy! Ozzy!” as the rocker retreated to his SUV and took advantage of a Florida Highway Patrol escort to his next stop, the Barnes & Noble Booksellers at Legacy Place in Palm Beach Gardens, where he would sign copies of his new autobiography, I Am Ozzy.
A lucky fan, David Bentley of West Palm Beach, brought his two sons with him to meet Osbourne after winning the book and a chance to jump a very long line of hundreds of fans for his autograph.
“I’ve seen him at Ozzfest and the man won’t stop,” Bentley said. “He’s the most determined person I’ve ever seen.”

This is disgraceful. Osbourne is known for his drug and alcohol abuse and allowing his children to talk disrespectfully to him and his wife while on TV. Can someone tell me how many policemen, firemen, teachers, Red
Cross volunteers, or military veterans has our mayor bestowed the keys to the City?
Ginger: You would be surprised how many Policemen, Firemen, Teachers, Red Cross and Military veterans grew up listening to Ozzy.
I would say it’s odd, since I went to Highschool in the 1980′s and our school would suspend kids for wearing Ozzy shirts because they deemed them “Satanic”. Total b*llsh*t and unconstitutional, and I’m glad to see times have changed.
Ginger – Come on .. the man has been in recovery for years. Its rock and roll baby.. and everyone you mentioned above listens to it. Maybe not Oz man but they listen. You must be divorced with no children .. right?
I strongly agree with you!!
Ozzy Seemed like a very nice guy. There were some kids who brought guitars hoping to get them signed but The Barnes and Noble People were like books only. But Ozzy said it was ok. So several kids had thier days made. That sounds like a hero to the younger generation. So Im just saying jealousy will get you nowhere. Firemen teachers and veterans are always praised on television by the news and people but what about ozzy they are always trying to dig up crap on him. Just leave Ozzy alone you Prude
Go Ozzy! I think it is wonderful! Ozzy is a great human being! My nephew is Mike Clarey and he was lucky enough to be near this great person! We love Ozzy Osbourne!!!
You people are so ignorant! Why do you all only concentrate on the negative? Ozzy’s sobriety has been in the news just as much as his drug and alcohol abuse! He has been sober for several years now, yet no one seems to applaud him for THAT! To me that is enough for the GREAT OZZY OSBOURNE to be acknowledged in ANY WAY! Whether it’s getting the key to the city or the key to the bathroom at the gas station! And as far as police, fire fighters etc they do get acknowledged for their work in many ways other than having to get a key to the city and on a daily basis from their communities etc. I hope next year Lil Wayne gets the key to the city, that oughta really set you off!
It makes me sick the mayor is trying to ruin West Palm Beach with her actions!I wish she would pack her bags and go home!As a native of West Palm Beach its sad to see an outsider come down here and disrespect this great city!!!
Ginger.. Ginger.. Ginger …. do you realize how many policemen, firemen, teachers, Red Cross volunteers, or military veterans lead not so perfect lives? All of which may also abuse drugs and alcohol and not to mention allow their children to talk disrespectfully to them? Do us a favor and remove your head from your arse. How many perfect little angels have you raised. No one in this world is perfect. I’d love to see the skeletons in YOUR closet. How about you read his book?! You just may learn something. Until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes, keep your judgements to yourself.
I’ve been an Ozzy fan for years and was surprised he was getting the key to the city but it was cool seeing him up there. And it was great to have him at Barnes & Noble. I can’t wait for the next Ozzfest. As for the mayor, I’ve seen her recieve a guitar from Vince Neil and now give the keys to the city to Ozzy Osbourne so she pretty much rocks in my book.
“What? Me worry?” – Alfred E. Newman
Gotta agree, Fred. Never would have thunk Ozzy would be better lookin’ than anyone, but he’s got our dog-faced Mayor beat hands down.
Frankel and Osborne used be deadhead concert nomads for a while but Ozzie got tired her swiping all the acid.
It was a great event. The Mayor spoke of his accomplishments (godfather of metal, recovery, sobriety) and thanked him for bringing Ozzfest to WPB for so many years. I suppose if Elvis or Rolling Stones were honored in th 60′s or 70′s respectively – there would also be people upset about them. Liking the Mayor, or disliking the Mayor, has nothing to do with a key to the city. In fact, I would say this little event brought hundreds of dollars to Clemtis street business, again.
Oh, why didn’t Ozzy bite Frankel’s head off? That would have been a great show, made lots of people happy, and would have qualified as a public service; thereby truly earning a key to the City.
If the key to the City was given to policemen, firemen, teachers, Red Cross volunteers, or military veterans, Dunkin Donuts would go out of business, lois Frankels new bathroom in her office would be soiled, fire rescue would take body parts from the morgue to train their dogs, the teachers would start living in their classroom and demand more of a pay raise for 24/7 service. Nice try Ginger Rock On Ozzy!
LoL… too effin funny!
Speaking of drugs…
Put those PAIN CLINICS out of business.
It’s one thing to give Ozzie the key to the city but another thing for a Mayor who’s a screwball to have her picture taken with that great big foolish smile as if she gets it. Mayor Frankel you are about as hip as 1.1 above plant life.
OZZY RULES!!!!! For all the baby boomers who grew up with OZZY sure do love his music!!!! Besides we all have our dark closets!!!!
For those of you looking down your nose at Ozzy, here’s a post from Valerie Brewer’s Facebook page this morning. Valerie is the mother of Michael Brewer, who was burned over 65% of his body last October:
“Hello everyone, Mikey met his favorite rocker yesterday. OZZY. He is a truly wonderful man, Deeply concerned about Mikeys well being and his recovery. We spent an hour sitting and talking with him about various things. (Mikey’s) recovery, music and family among other things. We are honored that Ozzy would take the time out of his busy schedule to spend time with Mikey. We will never forget it and will be forever grateful to him. Thank you Ozzy for making a young man’s wildest dream come true. God Bless. Valerie”
What a dingbat Lois Frankel is! She’ll stoop to any level to get her pix in the paper and get some notoriety.
WE need some CLASS in WPB, no low class mayors from NOW on!
Yeah … because WPB is SOOOOO classy. Give me an efiing break.
I am an born and raise Floridian.. Born in West Palm Beach and raised in Palm Beach Gardens..
For all y’all critisim the City of WPB, mayor and OZZY !!

Ozzy……Meh. Beavis and Butthead cartoon rock.
A very Fitting Charlie McCarthy for Frankel foTo-0p, though.
If you are interested in real rock, Joan Jett will be playing a benefit in Jupiter this weekend. If you are an Ozzy fan, this’ll be way above your league so bring yer earplugs, metimucil, lithium and get there early to grab a spot for your Lark Hoverounds.
Please come out and support our dogs/animals, regrdless !!!
Yeah, that’s a great way to get people to an event – insult them. It’s a good cause, and Joan Jett always rocks (not quite as much as OZZY imo) but you are a boob.
