Gifted actor Joaquin Phoenix, sporting a shaggy beard and sunglasses, made one of the all-time weird, Crispin Glover-esque appearances on David Letterman last night.
Entertainment Weekly suggests the interview was a hoax, all apart of an art project.
Ostensibly there to plug his new and presumably last movie, Two Lovers, Phoenix put on a bizarre performance.
Letterman gave him every chance to recover from his odd gaffs – monosyllabic answers, no smiles, avoiding Dave’s gaze, sticking gum under the edge “Late Show” desk. The audience giggled uneasily.
Finally, Dave had to lighten things up with a joke: “What can you tell us about your days with the Unabomber?” Read the L.A. Times’ review here.

When Dave asked about the actor’s recent move to become a hip-hop artist, Phoenix said, “I’d love to be on the show and perform.” Dave, by now perturbed at this train-wreck of an interview, said, “You know, that seems unlikely.”
By way of farewell, Letterman said, “Joaquin I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight.”

he’s gone
Just another hollywood loser
I wonder how people like this function day to day, dealing with agents, other actors, fans This guy has a personality of a rock. I thought Dave handled that well and good riddance to him on his acting career. I don\’t think he is a great actor as Dave Letterman’s says he is. This guy is a flake!
He is absolutely acting… Whether he was just messing around, or maybe preparing for a role (probably just messing around), who knows… but he was definitely acting. I’m sure it was still annoying to Dave, but he handled it REALLY well – the crowd was having fun with it! But after it all, when they went to commercial, you see him call off the whole charade and take off the glasses and talk to Dave for real.
Sure it seems weird to do something like that, but for these actors, they go on talk show after show after show…. he’s not the first one to do this, I don’t blame them for trying to have a little fun with it occasionally.
He wasn’t crazy or on drugs or anything… (well, maybe the drugs, but not affecting his demeanor.) you saw him break a few times laughing at Dave’s jokes, and also the nervous fidgeting – that’s another way of trying not to break character when you really want to laugh. Lay off the guy; it was obviously entertaining/interesting enough that you watched…
Oh PLEASE!!! This guy was higher than a KITE ………….
He ahs obviously never recovered from his role as Emperor in Gladiator, and is still carrying that arrogant personality around with him …….
Unfortunately, it appears he is following in his little brother River’s footsteps, who OD’d and died from a drug overdose.
Living in the Fast Lane tends to take it’s toll………
And that Hollywood Fast Lane is very Deadly!
That was incredible. He was totally acting. Do some research and you will find he\’s got this \"shtick\" thing going on right now. A couple of people have squealed on him, but most people don\’t know this yet.
A dead-on impression of severe opiate withdrawl.
It should have been a dead give away that he was acting when he mentioned his music was hip hop. People are so gullible.
Dave and him just Andy Kaufman’d everyone
